Desert Camouflage by Haddad|Drugan

Aluminum screens, translucent polycarbonate / 9' x 5.5' panels

Inspired by this transit line’s location between the Franklin Mountains and Fort Bliss, these artworks focus on the role of camouflage in natural and human-made situations. They portray icons of El Paso using patterns and techniques related to camouflage, including: historic figures rendered in a pixelated technique used in modern military uniforms; a yucca composed with a technique developed to disguise vehicles in World War I; spiral and line patterns informed by foliage-covered netting used by the military and by patterns found on snakes; scenes from nearby parks depicted in the complex, repeating patterns of toile fabric; and a formation of horse-and-riders that resolve into the camouflaging markings on native butterflies and moths when viewed from a distance.
