Patapsco Regional Greenway | Sykesville to McKeldin

The Sykesville to McKeldin Area segment of the Greenway will accommodate a variety of trail users, from hikers and equestrians on the natural surface sections to runners and bicyclists on the paved sections.

Sandosky Road Alternative

There are several challenges with connecting downtown Sykesville with the Greenway, including steep slopes, narrow sidewalks, and close proximity to traffic along Sandosky Road. Trail users would enter Freedom Park at the Buttercup Road intersection to connect with the Greenway.

Tour the possibilities for this alternative by scrolling through the maps below.

Boardwalk on Sandosky Road

As shown in the map walkthrough above, an important component of Alternative #1 would be providing a boardwalk and bicycle facilities to help trail users navigate the steep hill on Sandosky Road. Consider if this type of improvement would make you more willing to walk or bike between Sykesville and Freedom Park.

Multi-Use Pathway on Raincliffe Road

Another important component of Alternative #1, as seen in the map walkthrough, is the possibility of upgrading and extending the existing sidewalks on Raincliffe Road to a multi-use pathway. Would the type of pathway imagined in the image below make you more likely to walk or bike between Sykesville and Freedom Park?

MD 32 Alternative

While the Sandosky Road alternative is the most direct route, the MD 32 alternative presents another option for taking trail users from Sykesville to Freedom Park. Take a look at this alternative by scrolling through the map below.

Section One Tradeoffs

Considering the Sandosky Road and MD 32 alternatives requires weighing the benefits and tradeoffs of each alignment. The matrix below highlights some of the most significant factors.

Multi-Use Pathway on Raincliffe Road

Take another quick look at the possibility for upgrading and extending the sidewalks on Raincliffe Road to a multi-use pathway. As you may have noticed, this upgrade could be a part of both the Sandosky Road alternative and the MD 32 alternative.

Section Two (Park)

Soft Surface Trail through Patapsco Valley State Park

This map shows the proposed soft surface trail alignment through Patapsco Valley State Park. Trail users would access this part of the greenway through the existing trails in Freedom Park, which are visible on this map just south of the intersection of Raincliffe Road and Buttercup Road. To get to Freedom Park from Sykesville, trail users would use one of the connection alternatives outlined in Section One.

The eastern part of this section shows two diverging alternatives: the Piney Run Alternative, which follows Piney Run, and the South Branch Alternative, which follows the South Branch Patapsco River.

Henryton Road Bridge

There is a historic bridge abutment where Henryton Road ends on the south side of the South Branch Patapsco River. Whichever alternative is selected, the project will consider the feasibility of constructing a crossing for park users that utilizes what remains of the historic bridge.

Thickets and Brambles

Dense ground-level vegetation will be cleared in some areas. Passing through thickets will provide trail users with a view of another type of natural environment.

Crossings

The trail will need to cross several lightly trafficked roads and driveways. This is a picture of the driveway leading to the Freedom District Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Dense Forest

Many parts of the trail will traverse dense forest with mature trees.

Former Farmland

Intermittent clearings are often areas that may once have been farmed or inhabited. Some of these places may require cleanup to ensure trash, old fences, barbed wire, and other detritus do not pose hazards to trail users.

Vantage Points

There are many places along the trail that will allow for views of the surrounding area, including the historic CSX rail line as seen in this photo.

Steep Climbs

There are steep climbs throughout the park, but navigating the challenging terrain will be rewarded with views and the opportunity to explore a variety of natural environments.

Streams

There are streams and wetlands throughout the park. The trail will provide access to these scenic areas while avoiding impacts to wetlands and other environmentally sensitive areas.

Private Property

There is private property in the park that the trail should not disturb.

Ruins

The remains of even older structures may carry historical significance.

Old Growth

Larger, old growth trees have thrived in this part of Patapsco Valley State Park for decades and even centuries.

Streams

There are streams and wetlands throughout the park. The trail will provide access to these scenic areas while avoiding impacts to wetlands and other environmentally sensitive areas.

Clearings

Grassy clearings dot the landscape and connect areas of dense tree cover.

Bowhunters

The Heart of Maryland Bowhunters have a facility in the middle of Patapsco Valley State Park. The trail will need to avoid this area to ensure safety for trail users and to prevent interference with existing bowhunter activities.

Historic Structures

The remains of old structures may carry historical significance.

Boulders & Rocks

Rougher terrain may require navigating through small boulder fields and clusters of rocks.

Fields

Some larger fields will provide open areas with interesting viewsheds for trail users to enjoy.

Pine Forests

There are stands of evergreen trees in the park that some parts of the Greenway could traverse.

Henryton Road Bridge

There is a historic bridge abutment where Henryton Road ends on the south side of the South Branch Patapsco River. Whichever alternative is selected, the project will consider the feasibility of constructing a crossing for park users that utilizes what remains of the historic bridge.

Old Structures

Older and disused structures in parts of the trail provide a window into the recent past.

Henryton Tunnel

The Henryton Tunnel is a rail tunnel that first opened in 1850. It remains in active use.

Tree Canopy

Mature trees provide shade and, in some places, reduce the density of ground-level vegetation.

CSX Railway

Parts of the Greenway alignment may parallel the CSX railroad tracks.

Rolling Terrain

Much of the area in Patapsco Valley State Park is hilly and uneven.

Slopes & Views

Terrain provides views that will change with each bend of the trail.

Marriottsville Road

Marriottsville Road marks the eastern terminus of this section of the Patapsco Regional Greenway.

Section Two Tradeoffs

There are benefits and tradeoffs to consider with each of the potential natural surface trail alignments through Patapsco Valley State Park. As in Section One, the matrix below highlights some of the most significant factors to consider.
