Dundee Active Freeways - Harefield Road Corridor

Introduction

Sweco have now completed the feasibility stage of the Harefield-Strathmore Dundee Active Freeways project. The optioneering process of the project allowed a preferred route option to be identified. This is shown in the image below.

For more information on the feasibility stage, please see the Feasibility Stage Summary section of this Storymap

Concept Stage

Sweco have completed the outline concept design for the proposed active travel upgrades and are looking for your feedback to inform the finalised concept design.

We firmly believe that a successful project can only be delivered when the needs of those that will use the infrastructure are taken on board. Your input and comments on the proposed scheme are therefore key and will help us shape the proposals.

Note: The designs shown within this Storymap are in draft form and are subject to change. Traffic modelling will be required in the next stage of design in order to confirm the feasibility and deliverability of the proposals.

We would appreciate if you could review and complete the survey below. Your feedback will allow us to enhance the concept design and ensure that the proposals are suitable for all.

Feasibility Stage Summary

During the Feasibility Stage, the potential to implement an Active Freeway linking the communities of Lochee, Dryburgh, Hilltown and Stobswell to the City Centre via many key trip attractors was assessed. The image below shows the options that were considered.

A combination of community engagement feedback and results from our route option appraisal allowed us to identify the preferred option. The following summarises the main engagement points and key considerations during the feasibility stage:

  • It was not considered feasible to implement a continuous 'Active Freeway' Option A as there were considerable width constraints through and the streets surrounding the roundabout where Coldside Library is located. However, this route is the most direct and was generally popular with the community.
  • Generally, there is a desire for active travel provision to connect to Lochee High Street. However, this can be best served with the Coupar Angus Road-Lochee Road Active Freeway project. It was highlighted that Wellbank Lane was considered isolated and dark causing users to feel unsafe. For these reasons, Route Option B was deemed to be a less attractive option.
  • A suggestion was made during engagement to utilise Johnston Avenue. This was incorporated into Route Option C which would is a hybrid route of options A and B. This option gains all the benefits of Route Option A, whilst avoiding the narrow width roads surrounding roundabout at Coldside Library - allowing for a consistent provision throughout. Route Option C has been taken forward to concept stage as the preferred option.
