The Globalization of Culture

by: Hamzah Taleb

we look at culture as a secular idea that is shared between people of one characterization

Cultural globalization destroys that thought.

Globalization of culture is the shared experience, norms, symbols, and ideas that unite people on a global level.

To understand modern-day globalization of culture we have to explore its origin.

The origin of the modern-day globalization of culture.

In many aspects, the globalization of culture has increased inequality in developing countries. The benefit of globalization is not universal in which the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The moguls and CEO's of the world get pushed to the forefront of the economic food chain as their respective companies make billions while transporting cultures from one point of the globe to another. Viewing this topic using a cultural lens, globalization often results in the dilution of minority cultures as it becomes more "mainstream" and "acceptable". Globalization of culture can lead to a disassociation of one's own culture. For example, Middle Eastern countries like Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan suffer from this disassociation as customs and traditions have been changed. Aspects of their culture like fashion and attire has now been changed. They dress and behave like developed countries with a few remaining people wearing traditional middle eastern business attire or traditional wear. Before globalization, the businessmen and women of the middle eastern world did not wear suits they wore the white dishdasha with a traditional head wrap. Furthermore, globalization leads to the disappearance of many words, expression, and dialects from the local language because English has now be adopted as the universal language. A further result of this dilution of culture is non-minority groups being credited or applauded by the general public for aspects of a culture (which they did not originate) that they chose to popularize by using their privilege as a vehicle of acceptability.

It is a shared belief that the positive effects of the globalization of culture out-way the negative effects. Cultural globalization benefits the economic situation of developing countries which results in the betterment of living situations of families and individuals that live in these countries. The globalization of culture opens trade barriers that were previously closed which, furthers the destruction of cultural barriers that estrange us as a human race through the economic liberation of developing countries. Cultural globalization also provides populations around the world with better interconnectedness, it increases the exchange of values and ideas. It boosts the political activities of nations toward a global level through coordination with intergovernmental organizations. Without globalization, we would not be able to know what is going on in developing countries. We would be unaware of the cultures and traditions that exist outside our own borders.

Culteral Globalization encourages migration through the exposure of new opportunities outside cultural barriers.

  • Migration has been made much easier with the aid of cultural globalization.
  • Modern communications established through globalization allows migrants to easily maintain cultural ties with their point of origin.
  • Cultural reasons for migration can include quests for education or religious freedom.
  • The broadcasting of different society and ways of life are accessed through cultural globalization.
  • ex. A woman who is socially, politically, and economically oppressed in her home country sees a video on social media of a woman her age going to school in another country.
  • This video will now give motivation for that woman to migrate to a place where she can go to school.
  • Cultural globalization gives women like that access to the possibility of a different life through exposure.
  • People may also migrate to an area where there are people like them.
  • Ex. The area around square one is heavily populated by Arabs therefore people from Arabian countries that are looking to migrate to Canada will most likely move to that area in which they feel comfortable as they are surrounded by people who look like them.

English as the language of the world.

Cultural globalization and the power of the English language work hand in hand. English plays a major role in the process and end result of cultural globalization, it has become one of the most prized possession in the world of communication. In this new global village, English is the key to every lock that opens a door of cultural assimilation and dilution. Globalization and English side by side has created a whole new way of life for the human race. In the lens of commerce and economy the globalization of the English language is nothing but positive as it units the business men and women of the world. However, in the lens of culture English is a vessel of destruction as more and more street dialects are being eradicated with the common use of the language. All of a sudden you see English signs and translations on foreign countries as children forget the beautiful languages of their respective motherlands.
