Prior to the CNCP, nutria-related marsh damage was estimated to be as much as 102,585 acres, a conservative number because only the most obvious damage can be detected from aerial surveys. Sustained reduction of nutria populations plays an important role in protecting Louisiana's valuable coastal marshes.
Nutria were introduced to the USA at the end of the 19th century.
