Tajikistan Achieves SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

With hydropower providing a majority of Tajikistan's energy, the country has met each of SDG 7's Targets.

Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. Tajikistan is home to the Pamir Mountains, often referred to as the "Roof of the World," and is crisscrossed by several major rivers, including the Amu Darya and the Panj River.

Tajikistan’s achievement of  SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy  reflects remarkable progress in the nation's energy sector, driven largely by hydropower and a growing focus on renewable energy sources. This success is not only a milestone for Tajikistan but also a potential model for other nations striving to meet global energy access targets. While Tajikistan has made significant strides in expanding energy access, increasing efficiency, and integrating renewable sources, it faces ongoing challenges, particularly related to its reliance on hydropower and the impacts of climate change. As other countries look to Tajikistan’s example, they might consider adopting similar strategies, such as investing in solar and wind technologies, developing decentralized energy solutions for rural areas, and enhancing regional energy cooperation. For instance, countries with abundant solar potential, like Tajikistan, could leverage this resource to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen energy security. Similarly, international partnerships that promote clean energy innovation and infrastructure development could be key to accelerating global progress. How does your country compare? What strategies could be implemented to adopt more sustainable energy practices, and what challenges must be addressed to ensure equitable access to clean energy for all?
