Enhancing Urban Planning in the city of Mykolaiv

Mykolaiv

Mykolaiv, Ukraine

Situated in southern Ukraine, Mykolaiv was home to over 450,000 people before the conflict, making it the ninth largest city in the country. The city is positioned along the estuary of the Southern Bug River, close to the Black Sea. Mykolaiv was established in 1789 as a naval base following the Russian annexation of the Black Sea coast. In 1862, a commercial harbour was constructed, and by 1873, a railway was built to serve the port.

Today, Mykolaiv remains one of Ukraine’s most significant Black Sea ports, supporting the southern regions. Its location at the Southern Bug River’s estuary provides strategic access to the Black Sea, a factor that will continue to drive its importance for both commerce and tourism in the future.

Masterplan

The urban-wide strategies will be tested through five Pilot Projects, which will act as testing grounds for the six pillars as well as triggers for further transformation. Selected through a participatory process, the pilot projects will focus on sectors and uses that have been identified as key to the regeneration of Mykolaiv.

The pilot projects aim to propose tangible solutions whereby architects, engineers, developers and investors will be able to focus on specific sites and targets, promoting exchange between local and international professionals and informing local policies, while fostering long-term resiliency in Mykolaiv.

This is your opportunity to play a part in shaping the future of cities in Ukraine.

Your donation can have a direct impact on restoring homes, rebuilding essential infrastructure, and creating sustainable, resilient urban environments for future generations. Every contribution—whether large or small—helps bring these cities one step closer to recovery.
