Overview

On June 10 , 2024, at approximately 4:30 PM, the EPA was notified by the National Response Center of a potential release of Vinyl Chloride from a 6 train car derailment in Gregory, TX. Out of the 6 cars derailed, 1 car was upside down and 3 were on their sides. About 250 residents near 3rd Street, Franklin, Marion Street, Mission Street, The Glades Apartments, and Haven Apartments were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation. 

The Texas Commission of Environmental Quality, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of Emergency Management, and San Patricio County Emergency Management responded to monitor the incident.  EPA On Scene Coordinator and technical assistance contractor were activated to monitor the incident.

On June 11, 2024, at approximately 1:15 AM, all 4 rail cars were up-righted and back on the tracks. Subsequently, the Mayor of Gregory lifted the evacuation order for the residents.
