Introduction

El Dorado County is in the process of updating its local wildfire protection plan for the Western Slope of the County. This plan aims to identify local wildfire hazards and risks and outlines actions to address them. It will help set priorities for the community and support funding requests for wildfire mitigation projects.

What is a CWPP?

The Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is a plan that identifies specific wildland fire risks facing communities and neighborhoods and provides prioritized recommendations for local communities and agencies to reduce those risks.

A CWPP is a document collaboratively developed by the County, Fire Safe Councils, and community members to identify actionable solutions for wildfire risk reduction. The plan will identify and prioritize a variety of mitigation efforts such as areas for hazardous fuels reduction treatments, protecting infrastructure, increasing community preparedness and public education, and recommending actions homeowners and communities can take to reduce structure ignitability. In other words, it allows us to prioritize the places and resources that are important to us and to protect what we value most in our community.

Why Update the Western El Dorado County CWPP?

Due to the unique combinations of vegetation, topography, and weather, much of western El Dorado County is at high risk of wildfire. The updated Community Wildfire Protection Plan will be a roadmap to guide and prioritize wildfire prevention and preparedness efforts for communities, agencies, and individuals. This cohesive document will help drive collaborative efforts to make our home safer and better adapted for future wildfires

El Dorado County stakeholders are collaboratively developing a CWPP to realize the following overarching goals:

  • Enhance life safety and preparedness for responders and the public
  • Reduce the wildfire threat to values & assets at risk
  • Create healthy and productive fire adapted communities
  • Develop a CWPP that prioritizes mitigation actions for identified risks & hazards in western El Dorado County
  • Enhance the resiliency of western El Dorado County to future climate change impacts
  • Improve accountability, public trust, and efficiency in implementation of action items identified in the CWPP

CWPP Update Process

The Draft CWPP will be developed using up-to-date modeling and mapping of current wildfire risk as well as community input from throughout the region. Community input will be gathered through stakeholder and public workshops and surveys. The Draft CWPP will then be reviewed by stakeholders and the public and agreed to by member agencies. The Final CWPP will be used to mitigate wildfire risk and improve safety across the west slope through community projects, policies, and funding programs. The CWPP is intended to be a “living” document. It is standard practice to revise and update the CWPP approximately every 10 years.
