What is Law Enforcement?
Law: A rule established by authority, society, or custom.
Enforcement: To put or keep in force; to administer or compel observance of.
Every group, no matter the size, has rules for appropriate behavior. In a complex society, such as the United States, these rules are called "laws." The government, with the consent of the people, enacts laws. These laws are intended to keep people safe, to provide public services and to create a peaceful environment to live in.
A system of enforcement is necessary to ensure that people obey the laws. In this way, the government protects society from those who would do harm to others or to themselves.
