Our city is growing. While McKinney completed only 1 annexation that added 2 acres of land into the city, the city received 6 applications for annexation in 2023.
Our population is growing, too. As of January 1, 2024, the city is home to 214,810 people.
During 2023, McKinney added 3,413 people.
That growth isn't slowing down soon. Projections through 2040 show a potential population of 284,000.
In 2023, staff processed 429 development project submittals and held 174 pre-development meetings.
We issued 1,853 single family building permits valued at $583 Million.
Trinity Falls MUD accounted for 315 of those permits. That's 17% of all single family permits issued in 2023.

In 2023, we issued 129 building permits for new businesses, valued at $485,606,593.
Offices dominated this growth, accounting for 36% of all commercial building permits issued.
The McKinney Municipal Complex (City Hall) had the highest single valuation at $90 Million.
2023 saw 7 major development projects completed. They are valued at $156 Million.
We expanded services and improved quality of life by completing three educational facilities, a new office tower, and a state-of-the-art Executive Terminal at the Airport.
Capital improvement projects were underway all across the city in 2023.
The Engineering department managed 110 active infrastructure and facility improvement projects.
CIP projects active in 2023 represented $403 Million in investments for McKinney's future.
Thirty-two CIP Projects supported park improvements.
Eight major projects were completed in 2023 totaling $20.8M in investments.
The Neighborhood Empowerment Zone (NEZ) program encourages compatible infill development in historic neighborhoods, while the Historic Neighborhood Improvement Zone (HNIZ) program encourages the preservation of residences in historic neighborhoods.
In 2023, we processed 14 impact fee waivers in the NEZ and granted property tax exemptions to 10 residences in the HNIZ
Within the Historic District, property owners are required to apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) before a building permit can be issued to perform work.
In 2023, 104 COAs were approved.
The Tax Increment Reinvestment Zoning (TIRZ) was established in 2010 to provide support to projects revitalizing the Historic Town Center.
We awarded funding to 6 projects in the TIRZ in 2023.
Those 6 projects were awarded $581,441 in TIRZ funding.
These funds supported building restorations, infrastructure improvements, and safety upgrades in the historic downtown.
In 2023, Code Services staff was busy. We responded to a total of 6,700 code cases. By the end of the year, 86% or 5,765 of those cases were closed or canceled.
