Climate Change in the UK - Teacher Pack

7-11 (KS2, P3-7)

Introducing the Resources

Esri UK & The Met Office

These resources have been produced by the Education Team at Esri UK in partnership with climate scientists and educators at the Met Office.

Combining the latest authoritative data and climate science from the Met Office and with engaging, interactive maps built using Esri technology to create resources for your lessons!

The structure of the resources

The resources are split into two areas, Climate Science and Climate Change Impacts. There are three sets of resources aimed at Primary and Secondary age groups. The key questions covered in this resource are detailed below.

The resources can be used either as a structured lesson (or series of lessons) or teachers may choose to "pick and mix" to fit in with planned curriculum content and lessons.

Climate Science

  • What is the difference between weather and climate?
  • How will the seasons of the UK change by the end of the 21st century?
  • How are humans contributing to climate change?

Click below to view the Climate Science StoryMap.

Climate Change Impacts

  • What impacts will climate change have on people; across the UK? in your local area?
  • How can we adapt to minimise these impacts?

Click below to view the Climate Change Impacts StoryMap.

Beyond COP 26

Whilst COP26 is the catalyst that led us to create these resources they will persist well beyond the events in Glasgow. Like the challenges presented by climate change these resources are not going away!

We will be updating and adding to the resources as and when better or more up-to-date resources are released to keep them as current and accurate as possible.

Climate change will continue to be a central theme in classrooms across the country throughout the 21st century. There are opportunities to embed climate change impacts and adaptation across a range of topic areas so feel free to use any part of these resources where you think they can add value to your teaching and help reinforce links between curriculum content and climate change.

We have shared some possibilities below:

Rivers - Use the  Flooding Impacts StoryMap  to explore how climate change will impact flood risk on a river that you have studied.

Water Cycle - Use the  Current Climate map  to look at how the amount rainfall varies throughout the UK and through the year - how does the water cycle affect this? how does this variation affect the water cycle? does this have an impact on us?

Weather & Climate - Use the  Current Climate map  to explore the current climate of the UK and your local area.

If learners are taking of weather these can be compared to the climate data in the same area to determine if the observed weather is "typical".

Use the  Future Climate Map  to explore the future climate of the UK and your local area, how will the seasonal weather that we are familiar with change?

Energy & Electricity - The drive towards net-zero and and increased reliance on electricity for transportation, heating and cooling will have significant impacts on how the UK meets it's energy needs in the future. Use the  Energy StoryMap  to explore how the UK is currently generating electricity and implications for future energy use and production.
