Barrie

demographic explanation

Barrie is located right between Orillia and Vaughan and has a population of 142 531. The population density of Barrie is 237.2 people per square kilometre (population/area).

Why do people live in Barrie? Well I believe most people live there for the jobs, stores, or because they like living in a big city so not many people know them, because living in a small town, everybody knows everybody. So people will know if you are good, bad and everything inbetween.

What attracts people to live in this particular location? I've found that the most common attraction is the lower housing prices, cost of living, large employment growth and also it has a good transit system

Does industry influence the demographics? After doing some research, I've concluded that it just depends on what the context is. Becuase if you were looking at the "industry" being the riocan mall, then it will influence demographics because it will make the population increase, because of the stores and supplies within. But if you were to look at PetSmart or something as the industry, it may or may not influence, because it isn't as popular of a business but still somewhat popular.

How do the demographic characteristics of this town/city compaere to another major city in Canada? I have decided to compare the demographics of Barrie and Toronto for this question, and from what I found I realized Toronto is more popular towards people ages 20-39 while Barrie is fluent with all ages in the population, but is more commonly attracted towards ages 35-59 (the older generation).

Barrie

as you can see in the graph to the left, Barrie is open to all the ages but less likely to see a 80+ year old in barrie unless they are located there for medical reasons.

Toronto

Because Toronto is a much bigger city, the data is larger so we don't have as good of a perspective on how equal the demographics are. But from what we do see is Toronto is popular towards the younger generation, which makes sense because Toronto has many bars, clubs, restruants etc., making it an easier target towards the young adult eyes.

Barrie's background

Barrie in the 1900's

Barrie's beginning can be traced back to the First Nations using it as a place to rest before travel. the portage that ran between Lake Simcoe and the Nottawasaga River to Lake Huron. The War of 1812 resulted in increased use allowing for British troops and supplies to bypass the American forces at Detroit. At the war's end, settlers arrived and took up residence at the end of the portage, beginning the traces of Barrie's first community. The British military presence is reflected in many street names, and even in the name of the city itself, in honour of British Admiral Sir Robert Barrie.
