World Biome Tour
What is a biome?
Biomes are very large ecological areas on the earth's surface, with fauna and flora (animals and plants) adapting to their environment. They are often defined by abiotic factors such as temperature, climate, relief, geology, soils and vegetation.
Tropical Rainforest
This type of biome is found between the two tropics and especially around the equator. It is typically a hot and humid environment with a delicate ecosystem made up of dense, lush vegetation and trees as well as vibrant wildlife.
- The characteristics of the tropical rainforest include:
- Very high annual rainfall.
- High level of biodiversity.
- High temperature average.
- Nutrient-poor soil.

Why Visit A Tropical Rainforest?
There are many reasons to visit a tropical rainforest, with some main reasons being:
- To see the amazing flora and fauna, most of which are found nowhere else in the world.
- Kayaking.
- Paddle boarding.
- To experience the tranquillity and adrenaline that this biome brings.
The Amazon Rainforest in Brazil is the best example of the tropical forest biome.
Tundra
The coldest biome is noted for its frost-moulded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor nutrients, and short growing seasons. There are no trees found in the tundra, only small and scraggly shrubs as well as other low-lying grasses.
The picturesque winter-wonderland that is the tundra.
Why Visit A Tundra?
The main reasons you should visit the tundra biome are:
- To experience this unique biome - it may not exist in the future due to climate change.
- To go mountain climbing or hiking through the tranquil terrain.
- To undergo any activity involving snow or ice such as snowboarding, skiing, sledding or a snowball fight.
The Alaskan landscape in North America is an excellent place to experience the wonders of the tundra biome.
Savannah
The savannah biome, also called a steppe, grassland or prairie, is characterised by sparsely placed trees, a thick layer of grasses and large open plains. The rainfall is moderate and the average temperature is between 20 - 30 degrees celsius.
The African savannah.
Why Visit A Savannah?
The savannah biome is a great place to visit due to the:
- Large range of exotic animal life found there such as elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, lions and zebras.
- Unforgettable scenery experienced when hiking or on a jeep tour.
Amboseli National Park in Africa, is famous for its savannahs.
Desert
The driest of all biomes, they are characterised by their low rainfall. They contain a low range of animal and plant life due to the harsh conditions. Depending on their location, they can either be hot and dry, semi-arid, coastal or cold. Antarctica is an example of a cold desert, while the Great Victoria Desert is a hot and dry one.

Why Visit A Desert?
The reasons to visit the desert include:
- Sand sliding.
- Stargazing.
- Hiking.
- Hang gliding.
The Great Victoria Desert is the largest desert in Australia.
Deciduous/Temperate Forests
Characterised by high levels of precipitation, humidity and a range of deciduous trees. The yearly average temperature is 10 degrees Celsius. They are referred to as 'temperate' because the temperature is neither excessively cold nor excessively hot. This biome goes through the normal four seasons, with the trees defining the change in seasons through their actions, such as changing the colour of their leaves, loosing leave,s etc. The vegetation includes broad-leaf trees, shrubs and mosses. Animals include various mammals, insects, arachnids and birds.
The deciduous trees that make up this biome make for colourful scenery.
Why Visit A Deciduous/Temperate Forest?
- There are several reasons to visit this biome, with some main ones being:
- Camping.
- Wild foraging.
- Tree climbing.
- Hiking.
- Bird watching.
The deciduous/temperate forest of Germany is a wonderful place to experience this biome.
