Farmer Identification

CLU

A CLU, or  Common Land Unit , is an individual contiguous farming lot. It is the smallest unit of land that has a permanent, contiguous boundary, common land cover and land management, a common owner, and a common producer association.

A CLU provides a geographic link between the land and the following information:

  • Owner/Operator
  • Owner
  • Operator
  • Crop Types

Ag Parcels

Ag (agriculture) parcels are those whose Use Description relates to agricultural activities or use.

For areas along the pipeline where CLU's do not provide complete coverage, ag parcels are used to fill in the gaps.

Ag parcels provide:

  • Landowner
  • Addresses
  • Use

Ag parcels do not provide crop types.

USDA Subsidy Database

A farm subsidy is a government incentive paid to farmers to supplement their income and manage the supply of agricultural commodities.

Having this tabular information is valuable, but there is no spatial element to the data.

The data does not allow for the association of a recipient of a subsidy to their agricultural land.

Ag Practices

CLU Crop Types

Plants that are cultivated either for sale or for subsistence.

A single CLU may be associated with more than one crop type.

Water Table

The depth of the water table has a significant impact on the drainage of farmland.

Often times, farmers will need to install drain tile systems to help maintain water table levels so crops have the right soil conditions to promote healthy roots and maximum nutrient uptake.

Slope

Areas of land with a slope of less than 2% (flat land) are prone to standing water that could require drainage.

Soil Drainage

Seven classes of natural soil drainage are recognized:

  • Excessively drained
  • Somewhat excessively drained
  • Well drained
  • Moderately well drained
  • Somewhat poorly drained
  • Poorly drained
  • Very poorly drained

Identification of somewhat poorly drained, poorly drained and very poorly drained fields can help ascertain cropland that would be prone to use drain tiling.

Putting it all together...

Identify all CLUs intersecting the pipeline

Select CLUs with Corn and Soybeans or crops that are impacted by poor drainage.

Overlay the different soil variables impacting drainage.

Geoprocess all ag data layers into a final data set identifying the CLU's with the highest propensity of poor drainage.
