Haji Yusifli Mosque

Located in the city of Shusha, the Haji Yusifli Mosque appears on the list of heritage sites of the Republic of Azerbaijan (inventory No. 5089) as an architectural monument of the 18 th century. 1
CHW compared Hexagon satellite imagery dated July 1980 2 with satellite imagery captured in September 2002 3 to determine that the roof of the mosque as well as its eastern wall were removed during this period.

Satellite imagery captured on July 18, 2013 shows that by this date construction was already underway on a new structure at the site of the former mosque. Judging by the new building's dimensions, it appears that the original mosque was not renovated but rather was torn down during this construction episode. The new building was completed at some point prior to August 6, 2016. The destruction of the mosque is also confirmed by a video post-dating the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War; the new building does not resemble the original mosque (for the appearance of the original building see Supplementary Images).
