The Statue of Costanzo Ciano

Following a national contest, in 29 June 1942 an imposing statue of admiral Costanzo Ciano was inaugurated in Marina di Ravenna, nearby the southern pier.

Designed by architect Domenico Filippone and executed by sculptor Gian Domenico de Marchis , the monument was placed in the area of Ravenna because Costanzo Ciano, who would achieved fame through his raids against the Austrian imperial fleet, had set sail several times from the city.

The statue portraits the war hero while standing with his arms folded above a high bow-shaped basement. The National Fascist Party secretary Aldo Vidussoni takes part to the inauguration. He too takes place on a podium shaped like the bow of a ship, in order to commemorate Ciano and address the assembled crowd.

Along with the authorities, pictures of the event show several youths wearing a sailor suit, from the Gioventù Italiana del Littorio (i.e.: Italian Youth of the Lictor).

The statue of Costanzo Ciano, however, wouldn't last long. In 1944, following the signing by his son Galeazzo of the act of deposition of Mussolini in the seat of the Grand Council in 25 July 1943, the German troops had it blown up with explosive.
