Overview

March 31st, 2023 Severe Weather Outbreak

14 Confirmed Tornadoes

Summary

Throughout the outbreak, NWS Memphis warning forecasters kept extremely busy issuing a grand total of 35 Tornado Warnings and 15 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. The last signs of severe weather finally exited the CWA after 3:00 AM CDT on the morning of April 1. After a very quick turnaround, multiple NWS Memphis damage survey teams headed out later that same morning to investigate several areas of reported tornado damage. Surveys continued daily for almost a week following the event, confirming a total of fourteen tornadoes in our CWA alone, including three rated EF3s and five rated as EF2.

NWS Memphis extends a Special thank you to NWS Shreveport, Jackson (MS), Birmingham, and the PERiLS Project for their assistance with damage surveys. This outbreak had the fourth most tornadoes of any convective day (7 AM -7 AM CDT) since 1950 and will be studied for years to come.
