Recognized Businesses

The Colorado Green Business Network offers an online platform called  GreenBiztracker , where businesses can register for free and record sustainable practices. This information evaluates and assists businesses according to our points-based recognition criteria. Our current recognition application consists of four parts:

1. The Welcome Survey: This initial step gathers general business information and details how we can best support you.

2. Policy and Leadership Section: This part emphasizes the importance of policy in achieving lasting change and encourages comprehensive emissions tracking and inventories.

3. Resource Reduction Section: This section focuses on best practices in resource use, covering energy, water, transportation, purchasing, and waste.

4. Submission Agreement: The final step includes acknowledgments that you understand the program terms and are ready to submit your application.

Recognition Tiers:

Gold (100 Points): Organizations excelling at sustainable operations in their sector.

Silver (50 points): Organizations that have begun to integrate sustainability into multiple aspects of their organization.

Bronze (25 Points): Organizations who have begun implementing sustainability into daily operations.

The Support Level: To get assistance and support, organizations need to register in  GreenBizTracker. This does not include recognition.

Cowgirl Compost CO

Cowgirl Compost CO is a community-focused business that captures organic resources, food, and vegetative wastes, to make compost. Cowgirl Compost CO serves residential and commercial customers in Routt County and provides drop-off and pickup collections for food scraps. These organic resources are returned to the community as high-quality compost. The process keeps food and vegetation from becoming waste by handling it as nature intended in a fully circular system.

"Recycling organics through composting is a simple way to do something tangible every single day to make the world better for future generations."

-Winn Cowman, Cowgirl Compost CO founder

Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation

Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation has replaced 718 fluorescent lightbulbs with LED replacements during the calendar year 2023. Installation occurred across the resort, including at the administrative building and parking garages. In 2023 an electric snowmobile was added to their fleet.

"Our company is committed to procuring 100% renewable electricity by 2030 through a mix of onsite and offsite renewable energy projects and will proactively partner with utility providers across our portfolio to make this goal a reality."

-Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation

Sunniemade

Goals:

  • Sunniemade is redesigning their travel soap keeper to be more streamlined and durable, extending the product life and ensuring the overall product weight is ~30% lighter, resulting in lower emissions through the sales process and throughout the product's life. A new product launch will occur by the end of 2024.
  • Improve shipping efficiency by warehousing products in a central distribution hub with a fulfillment partner. By relocating fulfillment to a more central national location (currently fulfilling out of Steamboat), Sunniemade should see a ~20% reduction in shipping emissions. The transition to a fulfillment partner should occur by the end of 2024.

Steamboat Engineering and Design, Inc.

Goals:

  • Reduce gas-powered transportation as a company by 50% for the duration of the calendar years between 2024 - 2027 by utilizing electric vehicles, electric bikes, and bicycles for commuting to job sites, and commuting to and from the office. Two company electric bikes were purchased in 2024 that can be used by all employees to help achieve the goal.
  • Reduce paper consumption/waste by 30% for the duration of the calendar years between 2024 - 2027 by adding hand towels in bathrooms as an alternative option to paper towels, and by converting to electronic systems for taking notes and reviewing plans rather than using printed paper.

SavATree

Current Sustainable Practices:

  • Wood waste diversion efforts: No wood chips or wood waste goes to the landfill. Some chips are taken to Twin Enviro, where they are used as a road base and for improvements.
  • SavATree replaced all lightbulbs in our shop after we moved in 2022 with LED high-efficiency bulbs.
  • Participated in the Steamboat Springs Electric Vehicle Ride and Drive event with the Nissan Leaf.

Northwest Colorado Health

"Looking at ways we can be more environmentally sustainable and spread this knowledge to our staff in hopes they can take some of the methods of sustainability into their everyday practices as well.  We try to reduce our waste, save on electricity/power, be more efficient with our equipment and vehicle fleet, encourage sustainability, carpool when possible, use alternative transportation with incentive programs (CARbon Free Challenge), provide Environmental education through our Wellness committee, etc."

-Northwest Colorado Health

LiftUp of Routt County

LiftUp participates in the Grocery Rescue program with the Food Bank of the Rockies, whereby they receive food that would otherwise go to waste. LiftUp tries to minimize the food waste coming out of their food banks by providing foods with a short shelf life in their Grab and Go section, and giving expired foods to local ranchers for their goats. LiftUp had 279 volunteers in 2023 helping in different areas.

Elevated Mountain Apparel LLC

Future Goals:

  • Achieve 90% organic or recycled materials across all lines of products by 2026 while supporting product line expansion.
  • Implement a program to take back garments for proper textile recycling. Offer discounts for future purchases to encourage use.

Northwest Data Services

Being a green business doesn't always have to be about reducing waste or carbon emissions, it can also be about giving back to the local community by making donations, which Northwest Data Services excels at.

Goals:

  • Reduce usage of electricity by reducing A/C unit and computers.
  • Waste heat reduction by moving waste heat to heat water or air.

Gravity Haus

So far, Gravity Haus has replaced multiple HVAC units at the Steamboat location.

"Our largest goal is to formalize our environmental framework and ensure 100% education and communication with our employees and vendors."

- Gravity Haus

Seedhouse Coffee Roasters

"As a green coffee roaster, resource-efficiency means using energy-efficient equipment, minimizing water usage, managing waste responsibly, and sourcing beans sustainably. Community and leadership accomplishments involve engaging with coffee-growing communities, supporting fair trade practices, providing education and training, ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions, and advocating for sustainability within the coffee industry. It's about balancing operational efficiency with ethical leadership and positive community impact."

- Alyssa Stauffer, co-owner of Seedhouse Coffee Roasters

UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center

Why Join Now?

There are a LOT of reasons, and it just depends on what your business or organization is most interested in.

Resource and financial savings

By just registering for the Colorado Green Business Network of the Yampa Valley, businesses have access to free technical assistance and operational assessments. Assessments are about identifying and evaluating opportunities that produce resource and financial savings. These can lead to the reduction of input costs, disposal costs, compliance issues, worker exposure, risk and liability, while increasing performance,  customer preference , product differentiation, worker satisfaction and retention.

Funding opportunities

Another highly noted benefit of registering with CGBN is notification of new and upcoming  funding and financing opportunities . Right now we are seeing more federal and state funding put toward sustainability than ever before. This is helping businesses reduce the upfront costs of installing resource reduction equipment and incentivizing efficiency investments. Most businesses don’t have the time to invest seeking out these opportunities, but through the CGBN newsletter and communications with our team, businesses can learn of new funding opportunities early on.

For certified businesses, CGBN also writes letters of support for grant applications and provides priority permitting and regulatory assistance. All members can currently apply for  CGBN mini-grants  regardless of recognition status.

Legislation

Legislation, such as single use plastics bans, emissions reporting and polystyrene foam restrictions, are either in place or coming down the pipeline. In 2023 alone,  Colorado passed seven bills  to assist the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improve public health and the environment. Our members are the first to hear about these, so they won’t be scrambling later.

Consumer Demand

According to the  2022 Sustainable Market Share Index , the demand for sustainability-marketed products grew and accounted for 17.3% of total purchases, and continues to grow despite inflation. The report also found that products marketed as sustainable accounted for nearly a third of the growth in consumer packaged goods from 2013 to 2022, growing approximately two times faster than conventionally marketed products. Sustainable products also enjoyed a higher repeat customer rate.

In 2024, this trend is expected to continue as more and more consumers demand products and services that are good for the environment, supportive of local communities, and produced by companies that treat their employees and people in their supply chains fairly.

Certification matters

Consumers, particularly Gen Z and Millenials, are getting wise to greenwashing, and are seeking out businesses that are verifiably demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.  A  2023 Harvard Business Review report  found that Gen Z and Millenials are 30% more likely than older generations to spend more money on highly transparent brands and 20% more likely to choose it over its competitors. Come 2030 when Gen Z and Millennials surpass the purchasing power of Baby Boomers, this could add up to a $68 trillion dollar transfer of wealth.

Certification also creates a marketing edge over your competitors. According to the California Green Business Network, 42% of certified businesses reported an increase in business since receiving their recognition. CGBN offers that third party certification at no additional cost.

Community

The most common benefit CGBN hears from all of its members is the element of community, and the expertise being in the community provides — both from CGBN-YV teams and also from other like-minded businesses. Members are willing and happy to share best practices. Businesses have so much support from us and others like them, that they don’t have to reinvent the wheel or start from scratch learning what projects to take on. This really reduces the time commitment needed.

Best Practices

Easy ways to be a green business

Save Energy

Reducing the amount of energy or electricity your business uses can be an easy way to reduce the carbon emissions produced. According to Energy Star, switching to LED lights within your business produces light up to 90% more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. Lights are an essential part of every day, and reducing the energy used to produce electricity is an easy way to become a green business without sacrificing that much. You might consider an energy audit for your company to assess buildings, vehicles, and overall energy consumption and efficiency. As a member of the Colorado Green Business Network, funding is available to cover audits, and grants are available by application to convert to sustainable lighting for your business.

Calculate your carbon emissions

Transportation

How do you get to work? Carpooling, bus, biking, or walking are great alternatives to driving a car to work. Reducing the amount of emissions produced by transportation is an example of ways you can make a difference every day. If biking or taking the bus is not an easy, accessible way to get to work, then consider electric vehicles for your personal or business use. Fully electric cars produce zero tailpipe emissions, so driving one won’t add greenhouse gasses to the air. Colorado and other cities around the world are adding more and more electric vehicle charging stations to their communities. Many charging stations are located in premium parking locations, so investing in an electric car will save you time, and money, and will help decrease your carbon footprint.

Waste Management

Addressing what you throw out, recycle, or compost is a great way to establish a waste reduction program within your business. Increasing the amount of recycling can save you money by cutting down on disposal costs, and give products a longer life. Improving waste, water, and energy management can boost your business’ image and attract quality clients. Recycling within your company conserves natural resources and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. One of our bronze certified members of the Colorado Green Business Network, Cowgirl Compost, provides Yampa Valley’s only carbon negative community composting service.
