Priority sites will continue to be identified based on other conservation values. For example, important wildlife corridors for southern Canada will be identified using the connectivity analysis done for the CASC and based on Connectivity Conservation Area guidance and guidelines that are currently under review by the IUCN. Other important sites for connectivity may be identified by expert review and the Pathway to Canada Target 1 process. Additional sites that are critical for aquatic habitat connectivity will also be included pending future analysis by NCC and partners. Ecological systems and nationally and globally imperiled ecosystems that are poorly represented in existing protected areas may also be integrated into the identification of priority sites as this information becomes available. There is also an important initiative to build on Important Bird Areas and Alliance for Zero Extinction sites and identify Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in Canada using global criteria. As additional KBAs are identified and mapped they will also be incorporated into the CASC portfolio of important sites for conservation.
