Resources for CTE educators in law enforcement and firefighting

What is GIS?

GIS or a Geographic Information System is geographic mapping and analysis software used to collect, display, analyze, and communicate information and stories about a wide range of social and natural phenomena tied to specific locations. While GIS analyst and developer careers are readily available, the bulk of professional GIS users are in geo-enabled careers – like law enforcement, emergency response, or security.

Job Shadow: GIS in Firefighting

Helicopter Pilot - Los Angeles Fire Department

You just can't keep a person like Steve down on the ground for long. He prefers to save lives and protect property while manning the skies. You'll also see how GIS technology helps him keep the public safer than ever.

The Los Angeles City Fire Department's Air Operations unit has been operating since 1962. Its primary task is to provide rapid response to situations such as emergency rescue, wildfire, and emergency medical transport. The pilots at Air Operations undergo a rigorous screening and training regimen before they are certified.
