This map summarizes planning and project development efforts over the last five years incorporating improvements, or location-based needs, identified in the 2018 District 4 Bike Plan. This is a snapshot status as of July 2023 of project planning and development monitored by the District 4 Office of Transit & Active Transportation. Information is provided for monitoring purposes only.
2018 Bike Plan Progress
The 2018 District 4 Bike Plan identified 587 bicycle location-based needs. Of these 587 needs, progress has been made on 316 projects in planning, project development, or construction. The relative majority of these projects were funded by the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP), Caltrans' fix it first program. Of the 587 needs, 81 involve projects that have been completed. These 81 projects include interim and/or partial improvements as well as full project implementation.

Each county in the nine county Bay Area has seen progress on the bike plan.

Projects in Development or Completed
Below is the status of all 587 projects identified in the 2018 District 4 Bike Plan. Projects in blue represent a completed or interim/partially completed project. Projects in purple are in development and projects in grey are not in development.
Projects in development or completed include any bikeway improvement, some are minor bikeway improvements such as shoulder widening along rural routes, others include multi use trails. Project highlights are listed below in selected project summary.

North-South Greenway Gap Closure Project

The North-South Greenway Gap Closure Project replaced a 4 foot wide sidewalk along the US-101 northbound off-ramp with a 12-foot wide multi-use pathway/bridge over Corte Madera Creek. Phase two of the project will continue the path along Old Redwood Highway to the Greenbrae Pedestrian Overcrossing on the east side of US-101. Gilman Street Overcrossing

Caltrans and Alameda CTC are in the process of installing two roundabouts and a pedestrian/bike bridge by the Gilman Street interchange at I-80. The project will enhance safety at the interchange by replacing unprotected left turns and turning conflicts with a double roundabout. It will also close the gap in the Bay Trail at the west end of Gilman Street and create a dedicated bike lane from the west end to Fourth Street. The project is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2023.

The US-101/Blossom Hill Rd. Interchange project constructed a bridge structure over US 101 that included a separated bike and pedestrian path from Xander’s Crossing at Monterey Road to Coyote Creek trail off Blossom Hill Road and Silver Creek Valley Road.

Broadway Bike Lanes

As part of a pavement rehabilitation project, Broadway (SR-12) in the City of Sonoma was restriped to include bike lanes and enhanced pedestrian crossings.

Richmond San Rafael Bridge Pilot Program

The bicycle and pedestrian path across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is a 10 foot wide bicycle/pedestrian path that connects Contra Costa and Marin counties. The path is a part of a pilot program.

St. Helena to Calistoga Section Napa Valley Vine Trail

The Napa Valley Vine Trail is a 47-mile walking and biking trail that connects the entire Napa Valley – from Vallejo to Calistoga. The St. Helena to Calistoga project would consist of an approximately 6.8-mile Class I bicycle and pedestrian trail within St. Helena and Napa County. The proposed path would be 10-feet wide with 2-foot shoulders for a total width of 14 feet in most locations, narrowing to a lesser width (minimum 8 feet) in constrained locations. Construction is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2023.

Mokelumne Trail Bike and Pedestrian Overcrossing

The Mokelumne Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing project will construct a bridge spanning Highway 4 in Brentwood, closing a gap in the trail that was created by the highway’s expansion. In connecting two sides of the Mokelumne Trail, the bridge will provide safe access to cyclists and pedestrians for commuting and recreational travel. The project is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2023.

Hwy 101 Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing

This project proposes to construct a less challenging and more inviting bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing of US-101 in northern Santa Rosa providing a continuous path to enhance pedestrian and bicycle east-west connectivity to existing and proposed networks. This project was awarded an ATP grant and is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Wolfe Road I-280 Interchange Improvements

Interchange improvements will construct separated bikeways across the Wolfe Rd/I-280 interchange as well as widen sidewalks and improved landscaping. This project will construct an all ages and abilities bicycle facility across a multi lane interchange. Design phase is scheduled to be completed in 2023. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

El Camino Belmont Connector Path

A short two way multi use path connects bicyclists and pedestrians around El Camino (SR-82) and under Caltrain tracks. A pedestrian hybrid beacon, median refuge island and cross bike complete the connector to Emmett Ave.

Bay Trail Vine Trail Gap Closure Project

The Bay Tail Vine Trail Gap Closure Project will construct a bicycle facility in the City of Vallejo to fill a 1/3-mile gap in two regional trail systems. The Vallejo portion will be 5 miles along Wilson Avenue, Sacramento Street, Enterprise Drive, Lewis Brown Drive, Broadway, Sonoma Boulevard, Meadows Drive and Catalina Way in the northern end of the city. It will be connected to the trail in American Canyon, in the southern portion of Napa County. The Project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.

The Hwy 101 Pedestrian/Bike Bridge, which was completed in 2021, connects Adobe Reach Trail, West Bayshore Road and East Meadow Drive. The paths link the Baylands Golf Links, hiking and biking the Baylands Nature Preserve, Byxbee Park, and the San Francisco Bay Trail.

A pavement rehabilitation project on First St (SR-152) in the City of Gilroy included the construction of bike lanes, green paint conflict markings, and flashing beacons at crosswalks.

El Cerrito del Norte TOD Complete Streets Improvement Project

The El Cerrito del Norte TOD Complete Streets Improvement Project will implement multimodal transportation improvements identified on San Pablo Avenue. Project elements include enhanced and protected crosswalks, context-sensitive bikeways, bus boarding islands, circulation improvements, and various streetscape enhancements around and leading to the Del Norte BART Station.

East Bay Greenway

Caltrans partnered with the City of San Leandro to install pop up bikeways on East 14th Street (SR-185), a demonstration project for the East Bay Greenway. The East Bay Greenway is a proposed regional trail that would link multiple BART stations and provide a regional connection, phase one of the project is 16 miles long. This Project was awarded a state grant to fund construction.

Alemany Interchange Improvements

A new north-south pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists will connect San Bruno Avenue to the Alemany Farmers Market. The proposed multi-use path would provide a direct access from Alemany Farmers Market to other nearby neighborhoods. This improvement would also include a new crosswalk and traffic signal, which would increase safety and accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists. Phase 1 of the project has been completed. An ATP grant was awarded this project in 2018.

Rio Vista Complete Streets Project

The Rio Vista Complete Streets Project will construct class IV bikeways, continuous ADA accessible sidewalks, new pedestrian crossings and streetscape improvements on CA-12. This project provides a critical link to many of the local businesses. This new facility will provide a safe route and crossings to school for DH White Elementary School, Riverview Middle School, and Rio Vista High School. Construction is expected to begin in 2025.

The Imola Corridor Complete Streets Improvement Project will transform it into a place where people of all ages and abilities can travel safely and comfortably, whether walking, bicycling, riding transit, or driving. The project includes protected bike lanes, crossing improvements and trail connections.

Isabel Avenue Trail

As part of the SR-84 widening project, a multi use trail was constructed on the east side of Isabel Avenue. This trail connected with other existing trails in the City of Livermore further expanding the trail network build out.

Bayfront Expressway Pedestrian and Bicycle Overcrossing

The new multi-use bridge provides public access from the new Facebook Campus to the Bay Trail, Bayfront Park, and the National Wildlife Refuge located on the opposite side of Route 84.
