Back to School Tips from Bothell Police Department
With students returning to in-person learning, we can all make the back to school journey safer. See tips below:
Drivers: Practice being patient for buses, slow your speed to 20 mph in active school zones, and keep your eye out for children. Never use your cellphone behind the wheel.
Students Walking: Look both ways before crossing the street to make sure drivers can see you, walk with a friend - there is safety in numbers, obey traffic signals and use crosswalks whenever possible.
Riding in the Car: Know where you should be dropped off and picked up. Know who should be picking you up and do not accept a ride from a stranger.
The Safe Streets & Sidewalks Levy, passed by voters in 2016, helps make routes to school safer. The Safe School Walk Routes Program provides more sidewalks and improved crosswalk treatments such as flags and rapid flashing beacons to increase the visibility of students crossing the street. Recycle Right Bothell
Empty, clean, and dry may be the new mantra of recycling, but you don’t have to sacrifice water efficiency to do it.
Save water and recycle right by following a few simple steps. Pour out liquid and scrape out food. If you’re emptying a water bottle, use it to water plants! Fill bottles, cans, and food containers with a small amount of water, replace the lid, and shake vigorously to clean. Shake out excess water or air dry.
Bring Your Own Bag Beginning this October

Keep Storm Drains Clear to Prevent Flooding
By mid-October, we usually start to see lots of leaves dropping from trees throughout Bothell which inevitably lead to clogged storm drains. Clogged storm drains can result in localized flooding whenever we see heavy rainfall.
Our street sweepers will be running every day to help clear leaves, but with over 8,000 storm drains in Bothell, we need your help to remove some of these leaves and keep the storm drains working properly in your neighborhood.
Additional Ways You Can Help this Fall and Winter
Refrain from blowing leaves into the street and ask landscapers to do the same. Safely rake leaves and debris away from storm drain grates. Collect fallen leaves in your yard waste bin or use leaves as mulch in garden beds and landscaped areas. Ask your friends and neighbors to help keep nearby storm drains clear. Join the Adopt-A-Drain Program and volunteer to remove leaves from storm drains near you.
Prevent Pollution Week
Marking its 31st birthday this year, Pollution Prevention Week is September 19 - 24. Let's celebrate this national campaign by choosing simple ways to reduce our environmental impacts. Learn how to be part of the solution to pollution.

Puget Sound needs your help! This September is Puget Sound Starts Here month, the perfect time to focus on protecting streams, restoring salmon, and creating cleaner water.
We challenge you to start doing at least one action that helps keep water cleaner for a healthier Puget Sound and ecosystem. Learn how to help by taking the Puget Sound Starts Here pledge.
Spot Some Salmon
Look for Chinook in September, Sockeye in October, and Coho in November
Local salmon love North Creek! Keep an eye out as these iconic fish migrate upstream to spawn, lay their eggs, and complete their life cycle. Pay close attention while you’re walking along the North Creek Trail and be sure to take a look under bridges, as they make good resting spots during a salmon’s exhausting upstream journey.
Orca Recovery Day
Make a Difference and Join Local Events in October
Orca Recovery Day is an intentional day of action to restore habitat, reduce stormwater pollution, and educate the public about simple things they can do every day to help ensure survival of one of the most iconic species of the Pacific Northwest.
It starts with protecting their local food source - salmon! Join the celebration by volunteering with Friends of North Creek Forest and City of Bothell on October 16, or join another local volunteer event to help your community make a difference.
Learn the Sounds of Safety this Fire Prevention Month
Kick off Fire Prevention Month this October by coming up with a Home Fire Escape Plan. Everyone in your home should know two ways out of every room and where your family meeting place is.
Chirp Means Change
If your smoke alarm is chirping, that means it’s time to change the batteries, or to completely replace the unit. Smoke alarms should be installed in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. All smoke alarms must be replaced after ten years. Test your smoke alarms once every month by pushing the “test” button. If your smoke alarm makes A loud "beep," "beep," "beep," sound when you test it that means it's working.
Pop-Up Dog Park
Don't miss your chance to enjoy the Pop-up Dog Park before it closes on Sunday, September 19, 2021.
The City of Bothell's third Pop-up Dog Park has been inviting dogs and their owners to the Park at Bothell Landing since August of 2020 as part of an ongoing "pop-up" series. This series was created in response to growing demand for accessible, safe, and clean spaces for pets and their owners to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
