Molly E. Cule's Adventure

Go on a journey through the water cycle with Molly E. Cule!

Greetings! Molly E. Cule is my name and water is my game. I hope you enjoy reading my field journal. This was my WILDEST adventure through the water cycle.

December 1, 900 A.D.

I am in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South America.

Not much changes around here, the water temperature is 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Some marine life, like the Spinner Dolphins keep me entertained.

Traveling the world is my dream. It will probably stay a dream though because 97% of water molecules stay in the oceans. I heard a bad storm is on the way, maybe a new adventure awaits.

Well, 1,095 years have passed and a storm finally came! I ended up near a beach in a country called Brazil. Something strange happened as the sun warmed me, I got a lot of energy and floated into the air as water vapor!

I caught a current and joined many others high in the sky. It took a few days for us to move over land. We finally decide on a place to fall, the Amazon Rainforest! Looks like we'll stick around awhile because 75% of the water molecules from the Amazon Basin stay right here.

Our World's Largest Rainforest: The Amazon

June 15, 2017

One evening I floated to join a cloud in the tree tops. Suddenly we were blown North West by a current!

Our group was so big it took days for all of us to fall from the sky. We made quite a splash and we flooded the Amazon River. I hope I get to stay until the dry season so I can see a Pink River Dolphin.

I'm still in the Amazon Rainforest and many things have happened to me. The water level is lower now because many of my molecule friends have gone separate ways. With fewer of us around, the river is beginning to dry up. I did get to see a Pink River Dolphin; it was feeding on fish eggs in the shallows.

Pink Dolphins? | Weird Nature

You won't believe this story! I was floating along the river and got stuck on a sandy beach. Along came a bright pink bird called a Spoonbill. He snatched me up with his beak and I went on an adventure through his digestive system. It was an interesting few hours to say the least.

When I was deposited, I found myself in a grove of Brazil nut trees. The conditions were so dry it was not long before I was sucked up by a tree root. That night the tree seemed to sweat. I was told this is called transpiration. I moved out onto a leaf from the plant’s stoma. Once the sun came up it wasn’t long before I floated into the air again as water vapor, evapotranspiration is the fancy word. I caught a strong air current and headed north; I wonder where I will end up?

I caught a ride with the Gulf Stream riders, we are headed to South Africa! It’s the perfect time of year for us to get together and have a party! This is going to be exciting.

August 13, 2017

Change of plans, looks like we are headed to Texas! The wind currents took us a different route, that happens sometimes.

August 16, 2017

Texas seems to be a popular destination among the molecules, there a lot of us. In fact there are so many they say we are going to create a HUGE rain maker called a tropical storm. Houston is our destination, we should arrive by August 25.

August 18, 2017

Some of the molecules decided to drop in on the Windward Islands, this weakened us to a tropical wave.

Since Houston is as popular destination, after passing through the Windward Islands we picked up a few others. We had enough strength and power to create a category 4 hurricane, the people named us Harvey!

August 25, 2017

All 60 inches of us landed in Houston, TX on our target date. It was quite a sight to see. Upon landing in different watersheds, all of us went our separate ways. Some ended up in bayous, creeks, or rivers, and then headed to Gulf of Mexico! Some traveled through many layers of sand, gravel, and soil into aquifers. That’s where I am. I guess it is kind of cool since only 0.61% of us end up as groundwater.

September 24, 2020

I am still underground, in an aquifer called the Gulf Coast Aquifer. Life is not very exciting here. Some of the molecules have been here over 10,000 years! I hope I can get out of here sooner than that. I really want to visit the Arctic regions so I can join a glacier, and be part of the 2% club. That would be so cool (literally). Ohhhh…I hear a noise. It seems someone is drilling through the earth into the aquifer. Maybe they are installing a well and I can be pumped out of the ground. This could get interesting!
