You can do it.

From a Guess, to a GIS View of a Response in 30 minutes.

Objective:

Over the last few years of NZGIS4EM, best practices have emerged and been shared on how to run a response GIS effectively.

The next 30 minutes will show how to apply these for events that you face, so you can come away knowing that:

You can do it.

Scenario

You have seen GIS Capability elsewhere, but haven't had time to set it up in reduction or readiness...

Suddenly you have a 1 in 100 year natural event occurring and you receive a phonecall from Logistics at the EOC...

They have activated, with only a matter of time until full declaration...

And you are the only person with GIS Skills accessible to the EOC for the next 12 hours - until the next operational period...

You turn up in the EOC an hour later, what priorities could address that would allow the response to be well informed?

Your Game Plan: The First Shift

Permission and Mandate

What could this look like?

Are the Intel Manager and Logistics Desk awareness of GIS skills needed?

Tip 1: establish the source of truth and map production

What could this look like?

ArcGIS Pro Project Set-up (add an operations web map, add layout)

Tip 2: begin the EOC dissemination

What could this look like?

An Operations overview dashboard in a EOC storymap

Tip 3: establish a link to the field operations

What could this look like?

A rapid deployed QuickCapture if you are lucky, GPX and spreadsheets if you are not. Prepare for both.

Tip 4A: begin agency dissemination

What could this look like?

Create a sharing centre: ArcGIS Online group, add members from FENZ/ MCDEM

Tip 4B: Public Dissemination

What could this look like?

Set-up views of each layer and add to PIM and ask for tasking for it to be shared on public messaging

Tip 5: Prepare for the long haul with key apps and actions to sustain a well informed response

What could this look like?

Call for GIS assistance for shifts in upcoming ops period

Publishing field collection schemas so they are available on a device

Adding additional operational views to be displayed on the big screeen

Outcomes

One source of truth

Majority of stakeholders well informed

Minimising unnecessary stress and fatigue to yourself!
