Sinis Peninsula - Mal di Ventre Island
Marine Protected Area

WHAT
For several years the Sinis Peninsula - Mal di Ventre Island Marine Protected Area has been at the center of projects and activities focusing on the conservation of its invaluable environmental heritage. The MPA covers 30 kilometers of the Oristano Gulf in Sardinia, and it is 250 km wide. Hundreds of species are hosted within its biodiversity frame.
The TuneUp project partner MEDSEA Foundation has worked to facilitate the engagement of local communities in planning a sustainable future through an integrated management inspired by the methodology for Marine Protected Area Voluntary Environmental Contracts.
WHY
Although the general state of conservation is good, during the last decades the Sinis MPA has faced increasing pressures from climate change and the economic activities that take place along its borders, especially fishing and tourism. Key biodiversity in the area includes an alternation of rocky and sandy bottoms, where vast Posidonia meadows and endless marine organisms thrive; precious and fragile is also the transition area overlooking the ponds of Sal'e Porcus, Cabras and Mistras, which are protected by the Ramsar Convention of 1971. These are wetlands of utter importance, where hundreds of avian species live, nest and overwinter.
