Delta's Kindness Meters

Donate your spare change to a kindness meter to make positive change in our community

About

The City of Delta has installed kindness meters throughout the community to promote kindness in Delta and celebrate World Kindness Day.

In May 2021, the City of Delta worked with the Delta School District to repurpose five decommissioned double-headed parking meters as kindness meters to collect spare change for local organizations supporting those in need across Delta. To promote and encourage youth engagement and public art, local high school student artists were invited to design and paint the meters while incorporating the themes “We Love Delta” and “kindness”. The Delta Community Foundation will manage the collection and distribution of the kindness meter donations, ensuring that funding is provided to local organizations that strengthen and enhance the well-being of the Delta community.

The "Delta" in the River Delta

Designed by Claire Peters from Delta Secondary School: "I chose to incorporate the gentle hues and small-town country appeal of South Delta within my artwork as homage to my upbringing as an artist and nature lover. Delta, being a river delta, with its kind locals and vast stretches of unindustrialized land, quickly became a safe haven for me. I take heart in knowing that we are a part of what makes our city so beautiful, and that is our connection to this land and our hearts with it."

Good Vibes Only

Designed by Ava Burbank from Burnsview School: "I always work best when I can gather ideas and inspiration from others. My good friend Kaleigh suggested a 70’s feel good meter. Immediately, I fell in love with the idea: when I think of this decade, the popular 70’s promotion of kindness, love and acceptance is timeless. We should always remember to always be kind because we never know what someone is going through. Our actions have significant impact in the way the world revolves."

Wonder in Kindness

Designed by Jill Baccay from Delview Secondary School: "I wanted to have an image highlighting volunteers and those involved in non-profits, who provide to those in need within our communities, to show appreciation for their generosity and hard work. I decorated the meter with a lot of bold hearts to draw back to the love we have for our city, and especially the kindness of those who work hard to make others’ days brighter in a time like this."

Sunflowers

Designed by Ella Koehn from South Delta Secondary School: "I have always been passionate about art and I am still learning and developing my own voice as an artist. I experiment with many different mediums, although acrylic paint is my current favorite. I like to use elements of nature in my work, especially florals, which is one of the reasons why I chose to paint sunflowers. Sunflowers are known to represent sunshine and happiness, which to me ties in perfectly with the theme of kindness."

f(x)=x

Designed by Kyla Dooley from Seaquam Secondary School: "My meter design stems from my own personal interests in the relationships of art and math. It’s really fun and dynamic and though it may not be your traditional representation of kindness per se, I still definitely see it as such in a more abstract sense, with its bright colours and interwoven patterns there’s definitely that sense of warmth and positivity, and I hope that kindness will translate as such to those in the community around it."

She loves to travel and hopes she can somehow correspond that with her future job.
