- Determines the Learning Intentions
Build your Unit of Learning
Teacher Activity:
Building a UoL on Local Geography
- Choose one aspect of Local Geography
- Identify Learning Outcomes, Prior Knowledge & Action Verbs
- Decide what your students will know and be able to do
Supporting Inclusion
Planning Units of Learning to include students engaging with the L2LP
The Elements and Geoliteracy
The Elements inform how students will experience the Learning Outcomes
Geoliteracy refers to the students ability to think like a Geographer
Learner Experience
- Relates to what students will know and be able to do
- Engages and assesses all learners
- Helps students to think like Geographers (Elements and Geoliteracy)
STAYCATION
Learner Experiences
(Student Activities)
- Explore their local area through a Tourist Trail Activity
- Identify the reasons why tourists visit Clonmel using a Placemat Activity and a Sorting Activity
- Design a "Visit Clonmel" Tourist Brochure using the information gathered
Tourist Trail Activity:
In this activity students will engage with the OS Map to identify tourist attractions, transport networks and tourist services in the area
- Engages all learners
- Supports student engagement with geographical skills, patterns and scale
- Helps students think like geographers (Geoliteracy)
Placemat and Sorting Activities:
These activities give students the opportunity to work collaboratively to sort tourist attractions & services and identify the reasons why tourists visit Clonmel
- Engages all learners
- Supports student engagement with the Elements
- Incorporates Geoliteracy
Example of a Completed Placemat
Elements
Patterns: The physical & human factors that influence the growth of tourism
Process: The development of tourist activities e.g., horse racing and kayaking or hiking along the river Suir (The Suir Blueway)
System: Causes & consequences of the growth of tourism in Clonmel
Scale: Local & national tourist attractions
Geographical Skills: Identify tourist attractions & services on the OS map
Sustainability: Consider public transport to support sustainable tourism in the area
Geoliteracy
- There are interconnections between the River Suir (physical feature) and transport and tourism (human features) in Clonmel
- People interact with the River Suir and the mountains e.g., waymarked walks, picnic areas in the forest, Suir Blueway & fishing
- One economic implication of the development of the Suir Blueway is the reduction in the seasonal nature of tourism in Clonmel
L2LP
- Engages and assesses Learning Outcomes of the PLUs e.g., 4.6 Participate cooperatively in a group situation
Sample Tourist Brochure:
Students will work together to create a "Visit Clonmel" Tourist Brochure
- Engages and assesses all learners
- Supports student engagement with the Elements & Geoliteracy
Possible Success Criteria:
- Name and locate the area on a map.
- Identify the top 4 attractions from the Placemat Activity
- Describe or Assess why tourists visit these attractions
- Consider or Give Details on how tourists could travel to Clonmel
- Include maps & images of your chosen area and present in a format of your choice
Teacher Activity:
Design a Learner Experience
- On your local geography UoL
- Which engages and assesses all learners
- That helps students think like Geographers (incorporates the Elements & Geoliteracy)
Teacher Activity:
Using your Learner Experience complete your Local Geography Unit of Learning
