My white Nikes
The journey from factory to home
My white Nikes are my favourite shoes, this style of shoe has become very popular amongst today's teens. They are very comfortable, stylish and at a good price.
The Extraction:
Nike uses many materials to make all their products but there are only six main materials that make up the majority of all their products mass. First, the polyester, 19 percent of the polyester Nike uses is recycled. Nike helped recycle 82 million plastic water bottles to make polyester out of. The world cup jerseys Nike made in 2010 were 100% recycled polyester each using eight plastic bottles. The next main material Nike uses is rubber and they have used more and more environmentally preferred rubber. Nike released their environmentally preferred rubber in 2002, this altered rubber is made by incorporating more benign accelerators and vegetable oils, they also modify the processing. Eva foam is a very environmentally friendly material used in many shoes. The main producers of Eva Foam are located in China. The next material Nike widely uses is cotton. Nike is proud to say that they are using more and more organic cotton every year and plan to keep this trend going. Organic cotton means that it is harvested without chemical pesticides, no fertilizer, and defoliants. Nike gets most of its cotton from suppliers in China, India, Turkey, and the United state Of America. Synthetic leather is also used often in Nike products. Synthetic leather is a man-made fabric the is made to look and feel like real leather but function better than real leather. Nike uses synthetic leather in many of its products because it is cheaper than real leather, tends to be more breathable, and easier to clean. China and Taiwan are the leading suppliers of synthetic leather worldwide. Nike also uses real leather that is LWG certified. Nike does not believe in harvesting leather from animals in the amazon because they believe that it is contributing to deforestation Nike uses 1,500 different material vendors, suppliers, and companies. All the companies that they buy from are independent businesses.

Nike’s distribution channels can be primarily divided into two categories.
In its distribution channels, Nike focuses on direct selling to the consumer with Nike Direct. I got my shoes from Toronto premium outlets, a 2 and a half-hour-long drive.
The Disposal:
In early 1990, Nike began thinking about ways to lessen its impact on the environment and reduce the number of shoes headed for landfills. Nike's re-use a shoe was born. The program collects old, worn-out athletic shoes for recycling and transforms them into Nike Grind, a material used in creating athletic and playground surfaces as well as select Nike products.
The program has collected 28 million shoes for recycling since 1990. And, in 2008, Nike placed Reuse-A-Shoe bins in all of its U.S. retail stores — more than 150 locations. In the U.S., collected shoes head to Memphis, TN. At the recycling facility, these shoes are combined with Nike’s manufacturing waste to become Nike Grind material. The Memphis center cuts each shoe into three slices: rubber outsole, foam midsole and fibre upper. Each slice is fed through grinders and purified. In the end, three high-quality materials are ready to be reused:
- Nike Grind Rubber, made from the shoe’s outsole, is used in track surfaces, interlocking gym flooring tiles, playground surfacing and even new Nike products,
- Nike Grind Foam, made from the shoe’s midsole, is used as a cushion for outdoor basketball and tennis courts, as well as futsal fields.
- Nike Grind Fiber, made from the shoe’s fabric upper, is used in the creation of cushioning pads for facilities like indoor synthetic courts and wood courts.
Nike is constantly looking for ways to decrease its environmental footprint, so a few years ago, the company branched out from sports surfaces and started using pre-consumer Nike Grind, scrap material from its manufacturing facilities, in new Nike products, like zipper pulls, buttons and promotional items. saving the equivalent of 200,000 trees annually. And, by the way, it is made with 100% recycled cardboard, like all of Nike’s shoeboxes since 1995
I also donate my shoes that do not fit to the local women's shelter, there are many residents there who can use them, something everyone should consider!
