Philadelphia Criminal data
In this project I will be displaying crime data in the Philadelphia area. I will be taking criminal data from the living atlas and displaying it on a map. I will then filter down to Philadelphia and focus only on the Philadelphia county area. I will show where crime is taking place more often, and where it is happening the least. These results may help you if you are trying to find a place to live in the Philadelphia area. I am from Philadelphia and I hope to raise my family there as well. This data can help me find which areas to avoid, and those I should look into more. This could be benefical to those who are looking to do the same.
I added the layer USA crime index from the living atlas to show all the crime data in the USA.
Then I added the layer USA census data from the living atlas as-well. I then applied a filter in order to single out Philadelphia county. There is also a key to show you just how much crime is really happening. See how most of the county is above average, In central Philadelphia there are hardly any areas that go below average. However when you start to make your way northeast that seems to be where less crime is happening. Then as you can see as you move south it starts to go in that above average, more than average range.

This is a screenshot of what you can base these statistics on. On the previous map the tract is being based on average of the United States.
I then changed the data to not only show me the total crime but specifically homicide related crimes. This map is clearly showing that the areas with the most amount of homicides are in the central Philadelphia along with the southwestern portion. Compared to the northeast and northwest region it is significantly different. You can tell just by this map where you would want or not want to be living if you were to live in Philadelphia county.
Then I used the transparency tool so I can see the areas with the darkest areas and lightest areas. As you can see the northeast, and northwest area seems to be light on homicide compared to the Kensington, Crescentville area.
This is a table showing different types of crimes committed, and the amount of times that crime was committed. As you can see in the table, the only other crime committed more than murder is robbery. Amongst the crimes in the table the top three crimes that are taking place in Philadelphia county are robbery, murder, and assault. These are all violent crimes and maybe these are other crimes you can examine using the same process. These other crimes could also affect what area you might want to live.
For my analysis I went Into business analyst, I was able to single out Philadelphia county. I then proceeded to focus on two areas, Central, and Northeast Philadelphia. I then pulled up an Infograph of each area and decided to use the topic popular trends. There was plenty of information however I found the income to be interesting. The median house hold income in the northeast is 31 thousand dollars higher, the per capita income is 17 thousand dollars higher, and the median net worth is a sky rocketing 100 thousand dollars higher. Now if you refer back to the maps earlier there is a lot more crime happening the area with less income.
This is a video about how violent crimes are impacting Philadelphia county.
