Trip Overview

An overview of the June to July 2023 six-week field seminar for 12 educators from the United States to Kenya and Uganda as part of a Harper College Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad funded program in collaboration with Kenyatta University. The journey begins from O'Hare international airport with a connecting flight at Hamad International Airport in Qatar, proceeding to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya.

Arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) Transfer to Kenyatta University (KU)

Monday, June 19th

Kenyatta University Orientation, Campus tour, 1. 9:00 - 10:30 am Orientation, welcome program, getting to know KU. (location: KUCC - Hall 1) 2. 10:45 am - 1 pm KU campus tour; (location: KU campus) 3. 1-2pm – Lunch 4. 2 – 4:30 pm - Shopping for necessities at Garden City Mall 5. 6-8pm Welcome Dinner – KUCC. Cultural Entertainment dinner and entertainment); location: KUCC

Tuesday June 20th

Nairobi    1. 8:30-9:40am - Meeting and introduction of KU faculty who taught online          KUCC-Hall 1

2. 9:40 -10:00am - Kenya’s peoples, language & cultures;

3. 10:00 -10:20am -Kenya’s, land, environment, and development;

4. 10:20 - 10:40am -The Kiswahili Language (Learning) (preview);  

5. 11:00 - 12:00pm - Lecture (proposed): The marginalized communities of Kenya (request lecture);

6. 12:00 - 13:00pm - Lecture: The Metropolitan Nairobi: Growth history and development; informal settlements and urban sprawl;  

7. 13:00 - 14:00pm - Lunch                              

14:00 - 18:00pm - Guided Drive through Nairobi – Outer Ring Rd, Jogoo Rd, Ladhies Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue, Ngong Rd, Oginga Odinga Way, Langata Rd, Southern Bypass, Waiyaki Way, Nairobi Express Way, Eastern Bypass;

Nairobi area 1. 8:30 - 11 am - CITAM Pentecostal Church, Ongata Rongai (fellowship and service);

2. 11am - 1pm - Drive to Corner Baridi, overlooking the Great Rift Valley;

3. 1pm -5pm - Prof. Onywere's home for lunch and visit

Monday June 26th

Machakos County 1. 9am-12pm - Permaculture experience location: Nurisha Farm 2. 12pm-1pm - Small World County Club 3. 1pm-4pm - Kamuthanga aquaculture farm 4. 5pm - 7pm - Dinner 5. 7pm - 8pm - Roundtable discussion on women and leadership

Tuesday June 27th

Machakos County 1. 9am - 12pm - Iveti Forest Community Forestry Association (CFA). Lecture and hike 2. 1pm - 2 pm - Lunch 3. 2pm - 5 pm - Botanic garden tour, talk, including apiculture 4. 5pm - 7 pm - Dinner and social hour at Kanake Gardens

Wednesday June 28th

Soysambu, Gilgil Summary: Transit to Soysambu , African Forest social enterprise 1. 10am - Group arrive at African Forest, check-in

2. 11am-12pm - Site orientation and safety training

3. 12pm-1pm - Lunch

4. 1pm-5pm - Seed Savers Kenya

Lake Naivasha area Summary: Olkaria Geothermal Power Plant tour and Hell’s Gate National Park – includes climb up to Hobley volcano, down to Ol-Jorowa Gorge.
