Walk the UWE Beeline

Follow the map and look out for the Beeline yellow signs for spaces designed to support bees and other pollinators. Help yourself to herbs, fruit or vegetables along the way. Find out more  here .

SHUB swap shop

The sustainability Hub is the place to go to swap and share clothes household items electrical goods and more. Visit us in 1D015 opposite the veg stall and near the main information point n a Tues/Wed/Thurs from 12.00 - 15.00.   Click here to find out what our students and staff think of it.

Wild Kitchen – food for the planet

Try our delicious plant based food at Wild Kitchen in S Block as well as options at all cafes: for example Buddha bowls and vegan pizza in OneZone, vegan pies and chickpea curry in the SU bar, and vegan nuggets at The Grill. Good for you and good for the planet.

Palm oil tree

UWE academics worked with the Southeast Asia Rainforest Research Partnership to investigate the environmental impacts of oil palm expansion with aim of developing new strategies to improve the sustainability of the industry. Visit our oil palm -   find out more and what you can do here.

Traditional orchard

The orchard is made up of a mixture of historic fruit tree species, including Damson, Peach and Medlar. The area is surrounded by wildflowers in summer and is a magnet for both people and insects! It is managed using chemical free pest techniques and is within easy reach of our UWE beehives. Come and pick the fruit when it is ripe in the Autumn.

Beehives

Our bee hives are managed by volunteer bee keeper and sustainability team staff member Jeff Davey. To support the bees, the Grounds Team plant pollen rich native wildflowers across the campus. To learn more, come on one of our bee walk and talks and   view this Student Union film.

Frenchay Community Garden

This beautiful space is for students and staff who want to get involved in making a vegetable garden.

Using  permaculture  elements like ‘no dig’, this is a great place to come and join in or simply sit down and relax! Individual/team plots available and group  gardening sessions  email  sustainability@uwe.ac.uk  and  check here .

The walled garden

The campus' new restorative garden is based in the old walled kitchen garden by the Farmhouse, (walkway and entrance opposite the Student Union building). With beautiful planting, it's a space where staff and students can get away from the hustle and bustle of campus life

Zero Waste Shop

A result of the student Plastic Detox campaign, the Student Union at UWE U block shop has it’s very own zero waste section: buy everything from pasta to washing up liquid, and even get sustainable period products.  Find out more about Plastic Detox here .

The Envirotron

The Envirotron is a greenhouse with minimal environmental impact, used  for research on pollution, plant diseases, stress biology, the development of biosensors for nutrients in crops and the biogeochemistry of greenhouse gases.  Find out more here .

Decarbonising our campus

T block has solar photo voltaic panels as do Z and R Blocks, the Sports Centre and the new 900 bed Passivhaus student accommodation. T Block also houses our CHP (combined heat and power plant) supporting our District Heating Network.  Find out more about decarbonising our campus here.

Wildlife haven

One of UWE’s best kept secrets, this area provides a haven for nature on the edge of campus. Only ten minutes from X Block, take a walk and discover another world - a perfect lunchspot!

Our eco friendly Engineering Building

A great example of sustainability best practice, the building has natural ventilation, PV (solar) panels, connection to UWE Bristol’s district heating network, underfloor heating, lots of natural light, great social/study spaces and more.  Read our blog  and play  our game using this link  and the code 575F8C.

Climate action hub

Located in the Engineering Block foyer, the Science Communication Unit’s Climate Action Hub brings together students and researchers with communities for climate action. It is the place to go to find out more about sustainability at UWE and beyond. With social and study places, informal library and regular  MAKERS  electronic repairs session add this to your must-see places at Frenchay.

Cycle station by P Block

Our new secure bike park holds 120 bikes, 60 lockers, a cycle tool station and pump. It also provides indoor space for our bike mechanic who provides free bike repairs for students and staff every fortnight. For dates see  here .

R Block

R2 was built using sustainable materials and techniques including: straw bale (Modcell) wall construction for the main lecture theatre, solar shades (brise soleil) to reduce heat gain within the building by deflecting sunlight, recycled  slate shavings to make bonded tiles and  more .

Native wildflower meadow

Come and see a native meadow established from wildflower turf similar to that used at the Olympic Park during the 2012 games. The many plants include the Ox Eye Daisy, Red Campion, Ribwort Plantain and Yarrow and support bees butterflies and other insects.

Passivhaus student accommodation building site

In a ground breaking project, our newest student accommodation is built to passivhaus standards which require much less energy to run, plus the landscape design will boost biodiversity by following national  ‘Building with Nature’ standards , developed by UWE Bristol academics with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust.  Read more here .

Reuse and Recycling

Annual Big Give campaign : Held from April until July at the end of the academic year in which unwanted items and food are collected from students in halls and private accommodation across the city. In 2021/22, 1,783 bags were collected from UWE Bristol's donation banks. This equates to £24,962.00 in income from the sale of items collected by the  British Heart Foundation .

SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System)

As an alternative to the direct channelling of surface water through networks of pipes and sewers, much of UWE’s surface water is fed into an attractive watercourse on the East perimeter of the campus. This absorbs water and helps to prevent flash flooding. For our current research in this area see  here .

Water treatment system

In the shed there is a solar powered mobile water treatment system capable of delivering clean drinking water from the dirty water in our duck-pond. Using a novel disinfectant and a membrane filtration system developed by UWE Bristol academics, this low cost prototype is ideal for disaster relief and humanitarian emergencies and for use in remote or undeveloped areas of the world with water scarcity.

Bus station free bike loan and more

For buses e-scooters, bikes and cargo bikes, and more on sustainable  see here . And for the student cycle loan scheme, with over 80 bikes available for FREE for the year  see here .

And for short periods free bikes can be borrowed from the Sports Centre. Call the centre to book 0117 3286200.

Fairtrade at UWE Bristol

Fairtrade  products are available for purchase in all our campus shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants. The Students' Union shop stocks Fairtrade items. And over 70% of our coffee sold on campus is fairly traded, so you can make a difference every time you buy a cup!  Find out why it is important here .
