World War II Mapping Project

The Road to War - Aggression & Victories, a map to show events in WWII

1

Japan and Germany leave the League of Nations

The League failed at protecting China against attacks and aggression. This caused Japan and Germany to lose trust in them and therefore withdraw.

2

Japan's invasion of Korea & Manchuria

Increased pressure on Manchuria by China and the Soviet Union caused Japan to be concerned about their neutrality and alliances. Japan also wanted Korea to be part of them. They enacted many efforts to assimilate the two together but were unsuccessful.

3

Italy invades Abyssinia

This showcased how ineffective the League of Nations was, as they couldn't do anything if their decisions weren't supported by high powers. Italy had tried to take control of Abyssinia before, unsuccessfully, and had decided they needed to try again. They had a great success with this and Benito Mussolini appointed Victor Emmanuel III emperor of Ethiopia.

4

Italy withdraws from the League of Nations

The League of Nations implemented a punishment of sorts on Italy because they invaded Abyssinia. Italy didn't like the economic sanctions places on them and therefore decided to leave the League.

5

Hitler annexes Austria

Germany invades Austria, and incorporates Austria into the German Reich. This is known as Anschluss. It happened before the Kritallnaught riots and other violence towards Jews.

6

Hitler annexes Czechoslovakia

Germany demanded Czechoslovakia give any ethnic Germans as well as their land to Germany. Hitler threatened a war on Europe if they did not give up Sudetenland, so they struck a deal that Germany would take Sudetenland and they would recieve peace in exchange.

7

Hitler invades Poland

Hitler had a non-aggression pact with Poland, which he decided to break. the Soviet Union worked with Germany to seal Poland's fate, and demonstrate their power in the process. This invasion is also considered a trigger of WWII.

8

Hitler invades the Netherlands, Belgium, and France

Germany attacked all three at the same time. As well as Luzembourg, that was occupied within a day. The Netherlands and Belguim surrendered rather fast while France didn't because it was already taken. France didn't lead their army well and therefore lost the trust of the citizens.

9

Evacuation at Dunkirk

This was a very fast evacuation in which many civilians or civilian companies aided by giving boats and resources. Germany worked quickly and was also attacking Britain and France at the same time. 340 thousand troops were able to retreat safely due to the aid from the community and fast thinking from everyone that helped.

10

Operation Sea Lion

Hitler bombed Britain's harbours and shipping facilities to cripple their trades and imports. However Britain fought back, which caused Hitler to bomb a large area of London that was occupied with many civilians. There were little to no evacuations and almost all of the bombs Germany used were high explosives.

11

Operation Barbarossa

Operation Barbarossa broke the non-aggression pact between Hitler and Stalin. Germany had gathered over 3 million troops for this attack, and failed. They only saw the USSR as materials and resources, this attack caused Stalin to shift to the Allies side of the war.

12

Japan attacks Pearl Harbour

The attack on Pearl Harbour was an early morning attack, ill timed due to corals and obstacles on the sea floor/beach. It was also a surprise attack that caused the US to declare war on Japan after being very close to it due to Japan's treatment of China. Japan was punished by being cut off from imports and trades.
