Unlocking the power of OSM Data for problem solving

Equipping individuals on the basics of QGIS and OSM data

A Little backstory...

Open capacity building is crucial for cultivating a thriving open community. With this in mind, my project aimed to empower individuals with essential skills. To further enhance my knowledge and abilities, my mentor enrolled me in a QGIS training program conducted by Mr. Daniel Akor so that I will be able to train others.

The objectives

This legacy project aims to equip individuals with the essential skills of QGIS and OpenStreetMap data utilization to address real-world challenges.

Methodology

To kickstart this project, we began by designing a flyer and registration form to attract participants. Within two weeks of launching our publicity campaign, we were overwhelmed by the response, receiving over 1400 registrations. We extend our gratitude to HOTOSM and Missing Maps for their support in amplifying our training.

Next, we screened participants who lacked personal laptops or had indicated advanced QGIS knowledge. After the screening, we proceeded to onboard over 800 individuals to a group created for the training program.

On Day 1, participants received training on the foundational concepts of OpenStreetMap and essential OSM Editors such as JOSM and ID Editors. This included guidance on account creation and the specific skill of mapping buildings. Day 2 focused on introducing participants to the QGIS interface and demonstrating how to seamlessly integrate OSM data from JOSM to the QGIS environment. Day 3 delved into practical applications, training participants on how to perform flood analysis using the powerful analytical capabilities of QGIS. The trainings were facilitated by Adeola Oyetunde and I. Certificates were awarded to members who participated actively in the 3 days training
