Watershed Groups of Illinois

Illinois is comprised of several active watershed groups throughout the state. A watershed is defined as the area of land that contributes runoff to a lake, river, stream, wetland, estuary, or bay. The term is not restricted to surface water runoff and includes interactions with subsurface water. 

A watershed group is an organization of stakeholders collaborating to address existing or future water quality problems from both point source and non-point sources of pollutants. This story map is brought to you by Illinois Water Environment Association Watershed Management Committee.

This map offers you, the user, a unique way to explore active watershed groups in Illinois. By zooming in the map on the right-side or clicking on features in the map, you can read detailed information about watershed groups, groups’ goals, and more. As you zoom in further, you can see the geographic boundary of each active watershed group. A query tool, located in the Tool Tray in the upper right of the map viewer, allows you to select a Watershed Group, which displays information and zooms the map to show its extents. Additionally, a Layers List tool allows you to control the visibility of map layers and also includes the EPA Waters GeoViewer layers bundle, a wealth of authoritative information provided by the EPA. 

As you click on each active watershed group in the IWEA Watershed Viewer you will see icons representing groups’ goals.
