CV20024 UCC Undergrad & Postgrad Training Survey
This is an overview of the survey area and data collection. Please read before you arrive. See you on the Voyager!
Survey Area
The survey area is lower Cork Harbour and Approaches. The image shows sampling stations and MBES survey boxes from previous training surveys.

Indicative Timetable
Four stations to be completed. The theme of data collection will be connecting remote data acquisition with physical sampling of the seabed and water column.
Two Teams with alternating duties from stations 1 to 4.
Remote data aquisition will focus on MBES set up, line setting, display settings and data saving.
Ground truthing and benthos will use the Day Grab to obtain and describe physical samples of the seabed for groundtruthing acoustic interpretation and habitat characterisation.

Data Sheets
- Master Log
- Oceanography Log
- Geophysical Sediment Data Sheet
- Core Sampling Sheet
- Benthic Macrofauna Data Sheet
- Fisheries Species Data Sheet
- Fisheries Catch Numbers at Length
Benthic Megafauna Data Sheet
All require the Cruise Code i.e CV20024, Date, Time, Latitude and Longtitude, Depth, Sea state, Wind Direction and Speed.

Master Log Sheet
Log every station and every sampling activity at that station. This is going to be the master table in your report.
Oceanography Data Sheet
Data for the Conductivity Temperature and Depth ( CTD ) probe.
Day grab sediment sampling sheet for Geophysics
This provides a physical description of the sediments at every station and ground truths MBES acoustic interpretations of the seabed.
The sheet derives from the INFOMAR Ground Truthing and Sampling Strategy document.
We’ll use section 4.5 as our guide to completing it.
For colour description we’ll use the Munsell Colour matching system .
Download the Munsel color chart app from Playstore.
Core Log Sheet
Corers penetrate deeper into sediments than grabs. Deck equipment includes a 2m gravity corer and a Reineck Box Corer .
This sheet provides a field description of the structure and composition of the core sample.
Further investigations and subsampling of stata of the core takes place onshore.
This log sheet is from the INFOMAR Ground Truthing and Sampling Strategy document.
Day Grab Sediment Sampling Sheet for Fauna
This data sheet is also from the INFOMAR Ground Truthing and Sampling Strategy .
We’ll be using section 4.7 as our guide for completing it. We’re sampling macrobenthos and this video shows how .
Take Pictures, Take Videos, Record!
