Main Street Bridge Replacement Project

Overview

Main Street Bridge over Ventura River serves as an important traffic link and recreational trail in Ventura, providing access to an interchange with U.S. 101, with an on- and off-ramp approximately one mile west of the bridge.

In 2017, Caltrans performed a Structure Appraisal Report and rated the bridge as “structurally deficient”, “Scour Critical”, with a “poor” health index. Every Bridge Inspection Report performed since has concurred with the 2017 report findings.

Project Schedule

The proposed replacement bridge would be reconstructed in two stages.

First stage: The westbound direction (northern side of the bridge). Second stage: The eastbound direction (southern side of the bridge).

What to Expect During Construction

  • Continuous access would be provided for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians
  • Vehicle traffic would be limited to a single lane
  • Temporary striping and signals outside the permanent construction boundaries to allow for two-way traffic
  • Trees and vegetation within the work areas will be removed
  • Existing utilities, including water, sewer, electrical, telephone, and gas, would be temporarily or permanently relocated
  • All existing abutment foundations would be removed
  • Construction in the river would be conducted in the relatively dry season between April and October to avoid the highest river flows; however, a low flow diversion may be required during construction of some of the foundation and piers depending on the low flow location at the time of construction
  • Precast girders will be utilized to eliminate the need for temporary shoring falsework in the river
  • Construction and operation are not anticipated to result in any impacts on the existing USACE funded levee
