ANCO Factory (2021)

350 S Campbell St, Valparaiso - Porter County

ANCO Revitalization, LLC is awarded $100,000 to rehabilitate the exterior of one of the four buildings of the former ANCO Factory in Valparaiso, Indiana. Built circa 1945, the two-story brick industrial building will provide a much-needed transit center on the lower level. The remainder of the building will serve the new multi-use Journeyman Distillery Complex, sister to the highly successful version in Three Oaks, Michigan. Over 150 construction jobs will be created during development, and approximately 80 full-time employees will be employed within the first year of operation.

Auburn Automotive Company Administration Building (2021)

1600 S Wayne St, Auburn - DeKalb County

Located in the former Auburn Automotive Company Administration Building, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum is the only automobile museum in the world housed in the original headquarters building of the automobiles it represents. The building’s history and its collection have been a significant part of Auburn’s local, regional, and national economy. Designed by A.M. Strauss, the Art Deco masterpiece served as the brain and nerve center of the Auburn Automobile Company and Duesenberg, Inc. The museum is awarded $100,000 grant to replace the roof, allowing the building to remain a community and national icon for decades to come. This revitalization project will create twelve full-time jobs, five of which are low-to-moderate income.

Ernie Pyle World War II Museum (2021)

120 Briarwood Ave, Dana - Vermillion County

The Friends of Ernie Pyle is awarded $26,400 for exterior restoration of the birthplace of noted Indiana journalist Ernie Pyle. The Friends of Ernie Pyle operates the house as a museum for the journalist who became famous during World War II. Combined with the World War II Museum on-site, the organization preserves and interprets an important part of Hoosier and American history. 

Hong Kong Kitchen (2021)

102 E Main St, Madison - Jefferson County

Yu Jiang and Zu Tian Zhang, together with their children, have successfully run Hong Kong Kitchen inside of a prominent Italianate structure for nearly twenty years. They have been awarded $27,840. It is one of the only minority-owned businesses on Main Street in Madison’s historic district. Several of the building’s windows are deteriorated, so the owners wish to repair the historic wood windows and install exterior storm windows to preserve the original windows and prolong their life. The grant funding will partially pay for the labor of the window restoration expert and any required materials for restoration.

Honeywell Plumbing and Heating (2021)

144 S Wabash St, Wabash - Wabash County

The historic Honeywell Plumbing & Heating building is taking a step back in time and will look more like it did in the early 1900s. Amanda Lopez is awarded $27,858 to paint exterior trim, tuckpoint brick, and open the south side windows. Lopez owns Transform Consulting Group, which occupies the first floor of the building. The project will add a two-bedroom, basement-level apartment.

Nohr Building (2021)

413 Main St, Jasper - Dubois County

The Nohr Building was built in 1875 as a hotel. It is the last remaining wood structure in the Jasper Downtown Historic District. The building houses three commercial spaces on the main floor and three one-bedroom units on the upper floor, which will be used as short-term rentals. This $51,671 grant will be used to restore the original lapboard sliding façade and the storefront. Three housing units will be created, supporting the city’s need for short-term housing.

Odd Fellows Building (2021)

31 Public Square, Salem - Washington County

Lisa M. Fleming is awarded $100,000 to preserve the Odd Fellows Building in Salem. The brick building with Italianate limestone details has three stories and a unique limestone cellar stretching across 12,000 square feet. In 1897, the Salem Lodge #67 of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows was built for the use of the organization and leased space to others. The property is planned to have an event center, office space, retail and internet sales, and possibly a restaurant or tavern. Eight full-time and 24 part-time jobs will be created from the building’s three new businesses. 

PR Mallory Company Factory Smokestack (2021)

3029 E Washington St, Indianapolis - Marion County

The PR Mallory Company Factory Smokestack is a unique and iconic landmark on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. Englewood CDC and the John Boner Neighborhood Centers are awarded $85,000 to stabilize the 100-year-old, 140’ tall chimney on the Campus to ensure it can be saved for the future and remain an integral part of this historic campus. Ensuring the stability of the smokestack is also crucial to protect the health and safety of the 1,000 students and staff who use this campus every day.

Prewitt Theater Renovation (2021)

119 & 121 W Main St, Plainfield - Hendricks County

The Keller Huff Group is awarded $85,637 to renovate and preserve The Prewitt Theater located in Plainfield, IN. The theater was opened in November of 1927 and was used as a movie theatre until it closed its doors in 2005. The Keller Huff Group is renovating and restoring the theatre into an upscale restaurant and event center. Upon completion, the Prewitt Theater expects to provide five or six full-time jobs and up to 35 part-time jobs.

RomWeber Marketplace (2021)

7 S Eastern Ave, Batesville - Ripley County

The RomWeber Marketplace is awarded $79,463 for the preservation of this historic landmark located in Batesville that dates to 1863. The Marketplace is home to approximately 40 small dealers housed under their roof, along with a wedding venue and four retail and office locations. The restoration of its roof will further enhance the robust retail center continuing its valuable contribution as a viable commercial district for the City of Batesville. This restoration project will also allow Trinity Guardian, a health care device company, to employ twenty people on the third floor of the marketplace.

Willkie House (2021)

601 N Harrison St, Rushville - Rush County

The 601 Preservation LLC and the Willkie family is awarded $29,120 to preserve the Wendell Lewis Willkie home located in Rushville, Indiana. The Willkie home was built in 1876, and the Cullen-Mauzy-Willkie home stands in a residential section of Rushville. The property is planned to be a social gathering place for special events, tours and possibly a bed and breakfast. The Willkie House restoration is part of the redevelopment and revitalization of the county seat of Rush County.

Milligan Building (2022)

30 North Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN - Huntington County

Ian Stallings is awarded $100,000 to restore the exterior of the Milligan Building in Huntington, Indiana. The Victorian-era building, built on N Jefferson Street in 1889 is included in the Huntington Courthouse Square National Registry Historic District. The Silver Moon III Pub and an art gallery will be on the street level. High-end apartments and living/studio space for Wabash International Artists Residency (WIAR) are planned for the 2nd and 3rd floors.  

Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library (2022)

543 Indiana Avenue, Indianapolis, IN - Marion County

The Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library (KVML) is awarded $100,000 to support its “Care for KVML  and 543 Indiana Avenue” project. This three-story 10,400 square foot literary landmark is a flatiron-style structure built in 1882. The non-historic exterior insulation and finish systems surrounding the windows  and the non-historic windows will be replaced to mirror the original windows. The property will continue to be a unique cultural resource that houses artifacts, books, a museum store, and art related to Kurt Vonnegut. 

Mansard on Main (2022)

206 & 208 Main Street, Madison, IN - Jefferson County

Brantley and Katie Beck are awarded $100,000 to preserve and restore the Mansard on Main. Located in the Golden Block of downtown Madison, this rare Second Empire Style building has three original apartments overlooking Main Street and The Ohio River, along with two historic storefronts. The 8,000 square-foot property is planned to be two retail spaces on Main Street, with three residential apartments on the second and third floors. 

Brick Street Resturant LLC (2022)

448 East O and M Avenue, North Vernon, IN - Jennings County

Located in North Vernon, Indiana, the Brick Street Restaurant is awarded $61,693 to preserve and restore the original façade including masonry work and replacement of non-historic windows with period appropriate windows. The building was built in the 1870s and was home of the Couchman Fur business for much of the 1900s. The Brick Street Restaurant has preserved the historical atmosphere of the building and has become a local hometown dining establishment.

Balcony Block Building (2022)

113-115 North Michigan Street, Plymouth, IN - Marshall County

JGM Properties is awarded $45,162 to restore the Michigan Street façade and replace the roof of the Balcony Block Building, 113-115 North Michigan Street Plymouth, Indiana. This Italianate building is a contributing resource in the Plymouth Downtown National Register District. The building is home to Wild Rose Moon, a performing arts / education venue, and soon to be Aldridge Internal Medicine & Family Practice, a professional business. Both businesses contribute substantially to the economic activity in the historic downtown. The second floor of this building contains two (2) recently renovated urban loft apartments and one (1) recently renovated small office space. 

Roachdale Hardware (2022)

101 East Washington Street, Roachdale, IN - Putnam County

Charles Riggle is awarded $19,050 to preserve Roachdale Hardware to preserve the brick-and-mortar of the historic building. Since opening its doors in 1900, 101 E. Washington Street has served Roachdale as the local hardware store and always has been and continues to be a “community essential.” This preservation project will keep this significant community treasure from becoming a memory.

Dr. Jefferson Helm House (2022)

4102 E State Road 44, Rushville, IN - Rush County

Ronald V. Morris is awarded $100,000 to preserve and return to service the Dr. Jefferson Helm House. Located in Rush County, Dr. Helm built the small but distinctive home in 1845 reminiscent of the ideas of Thomas Jefferson. The property represents the faith and promise our pioneer ancestors placed in the aspiring state of Indiana, the power of education, and the virtue of science. The property will be adapted into a social gathering place to host tours, special events, and educational gatherings. Preservation work will include masonry restoration, chimney restoration, repair/restore roof, replacing non-historic windows with new period appropriate wood windows, repair/restore porch rails and columns, repair and replacement of historic doors, and reconstruction of two missing side porches based on physical evidence.

Free & Accepted Masons No 7 (2022)

117 Tyson Street, Versailles, IN - Ripley County

RR2 Properties LLC is awarded $100,000 to restore the Free & Accepted Masons No. 7 building in Versailles. The circa 1870 Italianate structure is located on the historic courthouse square in Versailles and was home to the Austin Theater and Masonic Lodge for many years. The 7,000 square foot property is planned to be an event venue and hotel to host weddings, reunions and other social gatherings and provide lodging for visitors to the Versailles State Park. The project includes removal of the existing roof, installation of a new roofing system, installation of new gutters and downspouts, replacement windows, frames, and sashes, rehabilitation of storefront, and replacement of exterior doors for both the main building at 117 Tyson Street and the historic addition.  

Brett-Burton House (2022)

607 E. Main Street, Washington, IN - Daviess County

Dusty Davis & Ryan Dashner are awarded $68,510 to restore and preserve the Brett-Burton House, and will include masonry tuckpointing, restoration of the porch, original wood windows, upper facade and eaves, restoration of the exterior doors, and removal of non-historic features. This grand display of Greek Revival house was built by Matthew Brett in 1850 and later converted in 1910 by Jesse Burton and used as the Liverpool Lodge #110 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for 80 years. This property is planned to be space available for the public to enjoy, possibly a restaurant and meeting space. 

Historic Davis Building (2022)

104 E Franklin St, Winchester, IN - Randolph County

John and Katie Lash are awarded $ 34256 for the preservation of the Historic Davis Building which occupies the corner of Franklin and Main Street on the Winchester Courthouse Square. Originally built in 1927 as additional spaces were needed in Winchester in response to the gas boom, many small business and residential tenants have fond memories of its service through the years. This historic renovation project will open up the unique glass atrium, restore masonry and refinish doors and windows, and further, will create multi-use opportunities for many more community members to enjoy for years ahead.
