Competing for Attention, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, by Chris Tucker
"I was making my annual spring flower trip to Anza-Borrego and as I was driving down the grade, I noticed the clouds were acting rather strange so I stopped. I was glad I did. These mammatus clouds only lasted a minute or two so I scurried to find some color and got one shot!"

True Love by the Solstice Sunset, Patrick's Point State Park, by Daniel Clouser
"When you've promised your family that the last picture for the day was taken, and the journey to dinner and rest for the night is underway, it's painful to see a beautiful sunset erupting from the driver seat.
My wife, sensing my pain, suggested we pull over at the next place where we might be able to see the coast and catch a few moments of the grandeur. As luck would have it, we came across Patrick's Point State Park, and the ranger at the gate was kind enough to let us through despite the close of day visitors coinciding with sunset.
We carefully but quickly drove to the nearest parking area for Wedding Rock, with little knowledge of what to expect...we did know that we were deep into golden hour and minutes away from the sun reaching the horizon. But, as most photographers know, the real light show actually occurs after the sun sets, like this, when the deeper colors of the encroaching night sky heighten the contrast with the light.
I am so grateful that my wife was with me and encourages me that sometimes it's ok to go back on my word about "the last one."

Golden Light at Day's End, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, by Dennis Brown
"I was planning to shoot the rising moon at Fonts Point when I spotted this Ocotillo being lit up by the last sliver of light coming between two bluffs just before the sun went down. This time of day and the magic that light can bring is precious and brings back memories of watching the sunset when I was growing up in New Hampshire."

Real Life, Mount Diablo State Park, by Jackson Wightman
"This photo was taken in Mount Diablo State Park on the Little Yosemite Valley Trail near the Macedo Ranch Trailhead. Somewhere I frequented often when I was in high school, this was the first time I was able to sufficiently capture the beauty of the green hills. This is a bright spot for me during the confusion of the COVID pandemic and stay at home order."

I Was about to Quit.... but Then I Kept Going, San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area, by Jillian Savage
"James Savage, 14 year old open water marathon swimmer, holds many records in open water swimming. Los Banos Creek Reservoir is where it all began. From the age of 8, James has been swimming daily at LBC, training for swims that many have only dreamed of doing. This is his home, where the blood, sweat, and tears have happened, preparing for those infamous words.... “You can’t do that! You’re too little! You’re too young!” Those words motivate him. They are the same words that are the reason he succeeds. Most people see the finish, the glory of completing what so many said he couldn’t do. From the shoreline of the amazing waters of Lake Tahoe, the beaches up and down the CA coastline, the celebration for earning another record.....that’s what they see on the news. What they don’t see are the hundreds of miles and thousands of hours of swimming at LBC he does every day to get his 5 minutes of fame. This is where champions are made. This is what we celebrate. James wouldn't be the swimmer he is if it weren’t for Los Banos Creek Reservoir.... where the rangers, park aides, and even maintenance workers have become family and the regulars, the visitors who are retired and spend their days fishing, cheer him on from their boats as he makes another lap around the lake. Every one of them has contributed in the making of a world class open water marathon swimmer and we are proud to say that LBC is where the magic happens and a place we call home. "

Lenticular Cloud at Sunset, Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve, by Raul Hernandez
"Taken at sunset at about 6:30 in Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve. Natural limestone "tufa tower" formations and spectacular lenticular clouds gave a stunning view. I used a 5-stop neutral-density filter to slow down the shutter speed to 30 sec and smooth out the water but not long enough to keep the clouds in shape. One of the most beautiful and breathtaking places in the world."
