This building, now home to KSQ Designs and the Elgin Park Brew Pub, used to be the old Gates Hardware Building. During site grading, the developers found an unusual underground storage tank--a 1920s train car that contained a mix of crude oil and water. The site was addressed through the OCC Brownfield Program and Petroleum Storage Tank Division.

Oct. 2015 - First Contact with Brownfields

The developer called the Brownfield Program and informed us they had found an unusual tank during site grading--a 1920s-era rail car. They asked our advice, and we referred them to the OCC Petroleum Storage Tank Division.

Nov. 2015 - Tank Removal

Sampling results showed no contaminants above risk-based levels of concern. So, the OCC Petroleum Storage Tank Division declared this facility closed, and no release case was opened.

August 2016 - Brownfield Certificate Issued

The backfill soil was capped in place by this parking lot.
