Reporting on Environmental and Land Issues: The Solutions Journalism Approach
April 2021
Portia Ladrido, Trainer
Bicol Umalohokan (BU), a Facebook-based communication support group for Filipino seed-savers, tailored its social media content strategy for a climate action campaign to SJN's four pillars of solutions reporting. This strategy gained the support of Bulatlat, an alternative online publication in the Philippines, and led to organic engagement. BU's collaboration with SJN-accredited trainer Portia Ladrido for a webinar series on solutions journalism piqued interest as well, with one student participant making solutions journalism her undergraduate thesis topic, and another solutions journalism trainer proposing BU's approach to a Southeast Asian NGO for a hybrid webinar as one of solutions journalism's digital strategy methods.

CBS takes up Solutions Journalism
June 2023
Chad Cross, CBS
The television network CBS trained news leaders at the local stations it owns including those in major markets like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago to bring solutions journalism to their audiences. It also formed a cross-station "CBS Local News Innovation Lab" so that these leaders can work on solutions-focused reporting together. In 2022, Chad Cross, who heads the CBS Innovation Lab, was the first TV executive to take part in one of SJN's Train-the-Trainer workshops. Previously, at KXAN in Austin, he helped lead two award-winning solutions reporting projects: 'S.O.S. Save Our Students' and 'Pandemic Pass or Fail.' Wendy McMahon, president and chief executive officer of CBS News and Stations, said CBS is focusing on solutions because it wants to 'look past the who, what, where and why to ask: How can we help? How can we help make our communities better places to live?' That's the aspiration."
