Helena Modjeska: US Theatrical Tours

From 1877-1907, Polish actress Helena Modjeska toured the United States and Canada. This project maps her historic career.

Tour Twenty-One (1898-1899)

Modjeska's twenty-first tour was her longest to date; she stopped in seventy-two cities (including seven she had never before patronized) in twenty US states, as well as Washington DC and Ontario. She debuted just one play: Antony and Cleopatra.

Tour Twenty-Two (1899-1900)

Modjeska's twenty-second tour carried her into the twentieth century; beginning September 1899 and ending March 1900, this tour included twenty US states, Manitoba and Ontario, and fifty-eight cities, including four where she had never before performed. On this tour, she debuted two productions: Marie Antoinette and The Ladies' Battle.

Tour Twenty-Three (1900-1901)

Modjeska's twenty-third tour was her longest to date; she made a whopping one hundred and two stops, visited twenty-seven states and three provinces, and played thirty cities where she had never before appeared.

Tour Twenty-Four (1901-1902)

For her twenty-fourth tour, Modjeska visited ninety-seven cities in twenty-six US states and three Canadian provinces. Though she did not debut any new performances, she did patronize eight never-before-attended cities.
