Shandon Walk

A short story map around one of the most historic parts of our city.

This is a relatively short walk around one of the most historic parts of our city. It highlights a selection of the many places of interest to explore and enjoy.

The tour starts on the edge of the medieval city, at Daunt’s Square, and takes you into the northern suburbs of the old city, into Shandon. Shandon comes from the Irish ‘Sean Dún’, meaning ‘old fort’. It’s not clear where the sean dún really was, but it is thought to have been replaced by Shandon Castle, which in turn was replaced by the Firkin Crane, a building that now houses an arts and dance centre.

From the northern suburbs, the walk brings you back down Shandon Street and across the North Gate Bridge, finishing at St Peter’s Church, within the area of the medieval walled city.
