GIS Day 2021 - Community Mapping Project
University of Virginia Library Scholars' Lab
University of Virginia Library Scholars' Lab
In celebration of international GIS Day, the UVa Library’s GIS group, housed within the Scholars’ Lab, would like to invite you to a community mapping project to map and publish the public art installations in and around Charlottesville. All you need is a mobile phone with a current browser to participate.
We hosted a kick off Zoom session on November 17 for all volunteer mappers. Don't worry if you were unable to attend the kick off, instructions and links to the survey below. Scroll down for more details.

Public art instills meaning—a greater sense of identity and understandings of where we live, work, and visit—creating memorable experiences for all. It humanizes the built environment, provides an intersection between past, present, and future, and can help communities thrive.
There are several sites that describe some public art already. We aim to build upon these collections to create a comprehensive list of all public are around Charlottesville.
You may enter art in the survey form below, in the Survey123 app or in a mobile browser.

The results map may take a few minutes to refresh, showing new entries.
Feel free to create entries for locations already entered. We will figure out a way to share all the unique views of each object.
You can take the survey offline using the Survey123 app to avoid any data charges. Once installed, the app will download all the map information to your phone. Then when you get back to WiFi, you can upload your entries. However, the browser-based survey is easier to use, and data use is minimal, so that would be our recommendation.

Platform-specific app links below. When launching the app, no need to sign-in, just select Continue without signing in. In the My Survey section, either search for the GIS Day Public Art Survey, or click the QR code button in the search bar and scan the QR code to load the survey.
We will take all the locations collected and build several free and open online applications to allow community members to navigate around to various art installations.
Having cake on GIS Day is a long held tradition. Unfortunately, conditions over the last two years have prevented a proper celebration. Let's hope to a great GIS Day cake in 2022! To hold us over, here are some of our cakes from years past.
