Pipeline Patrol

Capture daily patrol records and identify potential hazards for mitigation.

Linear infrastructure—pipelines, channels, powerlines, rail and road corridors—is managed and maintained with similar practices shown in this example. Personnel are scheduled to patrol the length of the asset and capture observations that are then transformed into preventative actions that keep these assets in continuous and safe operation.

Linear infrastructure can intersect the land of many landowners, across hundred's if not thousand's of kilometers, so efficient inspection record keeping and hazard mitigation along a corridor are critical to the safe operation of a linear infrastructure network.

Regulatory compliance

Regular patrol along the length (or sections) of a pipeline is often a regulatory requirement.

When operations are going well, record keeping can be one tap of a button, once a day, acknowledging the inspection was completed.

Hazard mitigation

When hazards are observed, you can record more detail. Depending on the frequency or complexity of the hazard, these may be readily categorized for one button data collection or presented as a form for more detailed record keeping.

Project overview

Pipeline Patrol is a sample project designed to show you how to use QuickCapture and Survey123 to record daily pipeline patrols and to document identified hazards.

Patrols that encounter no issues are recorded with the tap of a button in QuickCapture.

If any hazards are identified, they can be captured with additional buttons in QuickCapture. For hazards that require more detailed reporting, you can launch Survey123 from within QuickCapture to collect that detailed information in a company approved form.

And if immediate action is needed, call your supervisor from right within the app.

Close out hazard reports

The job doesn't finish after identifying a hazard, but when it has been mitigated and closed out.

Once back in the office, pipeline patrollers can view their open hazard reports and mark them as closed using an online form in a  dashboard .

Compliance at a glance

Keep a track of patrols on the Compliance tab of the dashboard by seeing your current and recent patrol completions. Identify pipelines or sections that may have been skipped for accessibility reasons, or need follow up patrols.

Try it yourself!

To get this sample project, follow these steps:

Step 1: Download the QuickCapture mobile app, and the Survey123 field app (they are free).

Step 2: Get the sample project.

Launch QuickCapture, and tap Continue without signing in on the launch page, and tap BROWSE PROJECTS.

Step 3: Start capturing.

Choose pipeline to report on, capture a completed patrol, and record a hazard.

When choosing obstructions or valve leaks, Survey123 automatically launches (and the survey downloads if this is your first time using the survey) for you to capture the extra detail required for these type of hazards.

Warning: This sample project is public and submitted observations will be viewable for 7 days (after which they will be automatically hidden).
