Chicano Park

Joining a guided ride? Meet your ride leaders in Chicano Park and we'll walk our bikes over to the skate park to start the tour.

Chicano Park is an important site of resistance, resilience and creativity. There are more than 80 paintings and dozens of gardens, sculptures and places to play. The site officially became a National Historic Landmark in 2017 but the story of Chicano Park starts in the 1960s. The California Department of Transportation built the 1-5 freeway and the Coronado Bridge with the promise of installing a park, but they didn't stay true to their word. When residents found out that the park was not being built they rallied to stop construction of the freeway. For 12 days they occupied the space. Eventually the city, state, and community members started to negotiate and in 1971 Chicano Park was formed.

Check out the murals and take a photo with your favorite one.

Cesar Chavez Park

Your first stop is the viewing pier, overlooking the San Diego Bay Bridge. Take a moment here to do a good ABC Quick Check on your bike and learn the steps to properly inspecting your bike before every ride.

There are public bathrooms at the park and usually there is parking available as well.

3

Cannery Workers Tribute

Visit the Tune Cannery Workers Tribute in the little Parque del Sol.

Read the plaques and find out how much money women could make in a day working in a cannery in the 1920s.

4

Sea Life Mural

Locate the Sea Life Mural at Restaurant Depot.

Can you find the star fish?

5

Sampson Street Bridge

Take a left on to Sampson Street and ride over the bridge.

Just like in a car, you're required to stop at all way stops, signal (by outstretching your left arm) and then ride through the intersection when it is your turn to go.

6

Memorial Park

This is a great space to have a picnic, enjoy a popsicle, stretch out your legs... There are tables and shady spots all over the park.

Practice some riding skills and drills like riding off curbs safely, or over obstacles. Do some scanning and signalling maneuvers with the guidance of a trained bike instructor.

When you're ready to ride on you can continue down Ocean View Blvd, or ride south to the ball fields and then take a left down the footpath post the skate park.

7

Memorial Park Indoor Field

Spot the "It takes a village to raise a child" mural near the skate park.

This area is known as Logan Heights. It was named for Congressman Johh A. Logan in 1871, who worked to fund a transcontinental railroad that would end here in San Diego. The project never happened and the area became residential instead. Logan Heights is one of the oldest communities in San Diego.

In the 1910s the Mexican Revolution led to an influx of Mexican refugees in the area and the area just south of us was controversially dubbed "Barrio Logan."
