Draw on momentum from the program’s recent onboarding of Dr. OluFunke Ogunderu as PIH’s Mental Health Lead – not only the first psychiatrist on staff but also a female, West African champion for mental health – to bolster the team’s structure, professional development, and internal coordination.

Maintain the delivery of high-quality services during COVID-19, while alleviating mental health needs from the pandemic and conducting outreach to boost community-based surveillance.

Improve care for common mental disorders through community awareness and CETA.

Strengthen and expand rehabilitation services for patients recovering from severe mental illness and substance abuse, such as by piloting peer support groups and establishing a half-way home to expand the homeless outreach program.

Continue supporting adolescent mental health through an integrated school health program that leverages ongoing UNFPA-funded investments promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights and combatting gender-based violence among youth.

Improve monitoring, evaluation, and quality systems across the mental health value chain by continuing to strengthen the electronic medical record system and developing project management tools to enhance team planning and implementation.

Support capacity building within the MOH by training and accompanying government providers.

Advocate for integrated, high-quality mental health services that reach the most vulnerable and remote communities by strengthening central-level policy development, including supporting the MOH in revising the National Mental Health Policy, Essential Package of Health Services, National Health Policy and Plan, Human Resources for Health Plan, and Essential Medicines List.
