Lavapies in Madrid: a vibrant area in transition
Introduction
Once a core in production and merchant trading area and in the 19 century famous for the tobacco industry. Housing was provided for workers, with a majority of women workers in the tobacco factory. Decline of industry in 20 century and evolution of slum areas. Aging and socio_economic downturns.
Changing populations including inflow from rural Spain, migrants and immigrants. Some places are now in the gentrification processes. Two major examples include the community garden and associated cultural and political events; also transformation of a building into an Islamic center for its multiethnic population. All these are indicators of globalization, glocalization, socio_economic changing populations or citizens. Evolving environmental awareness is becoming very evident in the Community Garden group including projects and cultural economic awareness.
