Manolo's Bakery

A Charlotte Success Story

A Colombian Immigrant

What is today called Manolo's Bakery is the brainchild of one man - Manuel Manolo Betancur. Originally from Colombia, Betancur immigrated to Tampa, Florida in 2000 and began working his way up the food ladder. After that, he earned a student visa while packing fish in Miami. Betancur was selected for a scholarship at King University in Bristol, Tennessee.

A Delicious Bakery

After a stint in Americorps, Betancur came to Charlotte in 2005 where he helped with his in-laws' bakery - then called Las Delicias and ran by the Martinez family. Las Delicias sold a variety of traditional Pan Dulce as well as pastries more familiar to Americans, like donuts.

An Expanding Business

Betancur began to build the business. Inspired by his time in Americorps working to get health insurance for migrant laborers on Christmas tree farms, he realized that there were immigrants all over the state that craved their homelands' pan dulce.

Trying Times

A New Name

After a divorce with his first wife (whose family owned Las Delicias), Betancur assumed full control of the bakery. In January 2020, he renamed the business. Betancur now proudly runs Manolo's Bakery.
