December 28, 2019 Tornado Event

Broken lines of thunderstorms developed and moved through eastern Oklahoma during the afternoon and early evening of December 28, 2019. Although instability was weak, very strong low-level wind shear was more than enough to support the development of low-level rotation in a couple of the stronger convective lines. One such line produced a weak tornado in Broken Arrow, OK. The damage from this tornado was assessed by NWS Tulsa meteorologists, and the results of the survey follow.

That circulation resulted in several tornadoes from Bristow to likely near the Arkansas state line. In addition to the tornadoes, there was a lot of straight-line wind damage across the region. Details of the tornadoes that have been surveyed follow.

May 18, 2019 Tornado Event

A squall line moved through eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas during the morning and early afternoon hours of May 18, 2019. Very strong low-level wind shear and moderately strong instability ahead of the squall line resulted in the development of several tornadoes, as well as damaging wind. The following summarizes the damage surveys that were conducted for these storms.

In addition to the tornado paths listed below, we surveyed damage around Ozark and Altus, AR, which was determined to be the result of straight-line wind. The damage near Altus was likely the result of 90 to 100 mph straight-line wind based on the observed tree damage in the area. We also surveyed damage in McAlester, OK, which was the result of straight-line wind, that damaged buildings and uprooted trees.

For a brief period of time, the main tornado was accompanied by a satellite tornado. This satellite tornado was documented by media storm chasers. Upon final investigation, this satellite vortex will be counted as a separate tornado. The Talala tornado damaged several homes, along with barns and shop buildings. The tornado damaged trees and power poles. Of particular note, the tornado destroyed two double-pole cross-braced electric transmission structures. This and the damage to a very well built home north of Talala were the basis for the EF-2 rating. The tornado averaged a forward speed of approximately 25 mph, but near 3:00 pm CDT the tornado nearly stalled north of Talala for several minutes before turning east prior to dissipating. A resident in the area remarked to the survey team that it seemed to take 3 to 5 minutes for the tornado to pass.
